Since the original Spaceballs came out in 1987, Star Wars and the broader world of fandom have become massively popular. While many franchises now launch spinoffs and shared universes, there’s only been one Spaceballs movie – until now. A sequel, Spaceballs 2, is in the works, directed by Josh Greenbaum and written by Josh Gad. It will bring back beloved cast members from the first film, including Rick Moranis returning from retirement, and introduce some new actors. The movie promises to parody not only the recent Star Wars sequels, but also other popular franchises. While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, Spaceballs 2 is well on its way to becoming a reality.
Daphne Zuniga, known for her role as Queen Vespa in the original Spaceballs, posted a photo on Instagram from the wrap party for Spaceballs 2, letting fans know that filming is officially finished. She described working on the movie as an “incredible experience.” You can see her post below.
When Will We See Spaceballs 2 Footage?
Filming for Spaceballs 2 has finished, just under three months after it started – a completion marked with a fun recreation of the classic Star Wars: The Force Awakens cast photo. This keeps the movie on track for its planned release. While a specific date hasn’t been announced, the film is currently aiming for a 2027 debut. With production wrapping up before 2026, things are looking good for a 2027 release, giving the team ample time to finish editing and any necessary visual effects – which are likely, given it’s a Star Wars parody.
With filming complete, fans are eager for a glimpse of Spaceballs 2. If the movie stays on track for a 2027 release, it will likely be some time before any trailers or clips are shown. There’s no rush, as the film is still over a year away. While fans would love to see something now, it’s best if Amazon and the filmmakers hold back and keep the jokes and surprises under wraps until closer to the release. Although The Force Awakens had a teaser released 13 months before its premiere, that situation was unique.
There are several possible reasons why filming for Spaceballs 2 started now, well before its planned 2027 release. The actors are all very popular, and it might have been the only time they could all be available. The filmmakers may also have wanted to allow time for potential reshoots in 2026. With the new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, coming out next summer, it’s likely Spaceballs 2 will include references to it – and it would be surprising if they didn’t parody a scene, perhaps by introducing Pizza the Hutt’s son.
It’s disappointing we probably won’t get a glimpse of Spaceballs 2 anytime soon, but it’s encouraging to hear the project is moving forward. Fans have been eager for a sequel for years, and now feels like the right moment. With so many popular movies and franchises ripe for parody, and spoof comedies making a comeback with films like The Naked Gun reboot and Spinal Tap II, we’re hoping Spaceballs 2 will be worth the wait when it arrives in 2027.
