The new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy arrives on Paramount+ in January, introducing a new group of cadets. Set in the 32nd century, after the events of Discovery, the show aims to bring a fresh, younger perspective to the Star Trek universe. Interestingly, it’s the casting of an adult officer that continues a unique tradition within the franchise.
We’ve just gotten our first glimpse of WWE star Becky Lynch (Rebecca Quin) as a member of Starfleet Academy. Photos show her in a Starfleet gold uniform and with a red bob haircut, standing on the bridge of a ship that appears to be the USS Athena. This continues a long-standing tradition for Star Trek of featuring wrestling stars, a practice that began in the early 1990s. Lynch isn’t the first wrestler to join the Star Trek universe; several WWE (and previously WWF) athletes have appeared in Trek shows over the years.
Becky Lynch Continues Wrestling’s Legacy in Star Trek

Several WWE wrestlers have appeared in Star Trek episodes. The most well-known is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who was in the Voyager episode “Tsunkatse” back in 2000. He played a Pendari Champion, a fitting role for him, and fought against the character Seven of Nine in a gladiator match. Considering how famous Johnson is today as an action star, this appearance is now the most memorable crossover between the wrestling world and Star Trek.
While Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson isn’t the first wrestler to appear in Star Trek, many wrestling stars have made cameos. Paul Wight (‘Big Show’) and Tommy Lister Jr. both appeared in Star Trek: Enterprise. However, the very first wrestler to appear in a Trek series was Tom Magee, who played a Klingon named Fek’lhr in a 1991 episode of The Next Generation called “Devil’s Due.
The exciting collaboration between WWE and Star Trek continues with the addition of Becky Lynch, marking the first time a female wrestler has joined the cast. While details about her character are scarce, Lynch has described Lt. Ya, her role in the series, as a Starfleet officer unlike any other. Fans can see Lynch join the ranks of other WWE stars in the Star Trek universe when Starfleet Academy premieres on Paramount+ January 15th.
