Netflix to acquire Warner Bros.

Netflix is buying Warner Bros. for $72 billion. The deal is expected to finalize after Warner Bros. Discovery spins off its Global Networks division, Discovery Global, as a separate, publicly traded company, which is anticipated to happen in the third quarter of 2026.

Netflix is adding popular shows and movies like The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Wizard of Oz, and everything from the DC Universe to its streaming library. This includes content from HBO and HBO Max.

This deal means Netflix will soon own Warner Bros. Games and all of its studios, including Avalanche Software, NetherRealm Studios, Portkey Games, Rocksteady Studios, TT Games, and WB Games teams in Boston, Montreal, New York, and San Francisco.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently stated that the company’s goal is to provide entertainment globally. By adding Warner Bros.’ extensive collection of popular and classic films and shows—including titles like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Harry Potter, and Friends—to their already popular lineup featuring shows such as Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters, and Squid Game, Netflix believes it can achieve this goal more effectively. The combination will allow them to offer viewers even more of the content they enjoy and shape the future of storytelling.

Netflix’s Greg Peters explained that acquiring Warner Bros. will significantly enhance what Netflix offers and drive growth for years to come. Warner Bros. has been a major force in entertainment for over a century, consistently delivering high-quality content thanks to its talented team and production resources. By combining Warner Bros.’ creativity with Netflix’s global reach and successful streaming model, more people will have access to great entertainment, boosting Netflix’s subscriber base, supporting the industry as a whole, and ultimately benefiting shareholders.

David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, announced that the company is joining forces with Netflix to deliver even more of the entertainment people love. He highlighted Warner Bros.’ long history of captivating audiences and influencing culture, and expressed confidence that this partnership will ensure these beloved stories continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.
