Rebus Returns: Outlander Star Back for Highly Anticipated Second Season!

It’s been officially announced that the second season of the widely-loved crime drama, Rebus, will be released by the BBC.

As a film enthusiast, I recently found myself captivated by the fresh take on the series that stars Richard Rankin. Debuting in May to both critical praise and impressive ratings, it has since accumulated three Royal Television Society (RTS) Scotland awards for its excellence: Best Drama, Writer, and Director.

Indeed, this implies that there’s still more to come on our Rebus adventure, and it seems like the end is not in sight yet.

In the upcoming season, Outlander‘s Rankin will continue as the main detective, and we can expect Rebus to delve into the connections between criminal elements involved in Edinburgh’s drug trade and the elite, often untouchable world of law and finance. This is a realm where the police sometimes hesitate to venture.

According to the BBC’s announcement, Rebus season 2 will delve deeper into Rebus’s intricate life, following him as he tackles crime in Scotland while dealing with his own inner struggles.

Regarding the announcement of renewing the series, Louise Thornton, head of commissioning for BBC Scotland, expressed her delight: “We were astounded by the audience’s reaction to the revamped Rebus in its first season, so it has always been a top priority for us to bring it back for a second round. The blend of captivating storytelling, compelling performances, and superior production quality will ensure that this new series is not to be missed on television.

This task forms a key aspect of our newly unveiled plan to produce more high-impact scripted shows from Scotland. We’re optimistic that viewers will find this upcoming series as engaging as they did the initial one.

According to Thornton’s observation, Rebus joins an expanding list of distinctive Scottish productions that currently includes Shetland, The Bombing of Pan Am 103, and Vigil.

The show draws inspiration from the popular novels penned by Ian Rankin; he additionally takes up an executive producer role for the series.

In regards to the announcement of Season 2, he expressed: “The finale of Season 1 of Rebus left things unresolved. Only screenwriter Gregory Burke holds the answers for what transpires next. Thus, I am immensely looking forward to the arrival of Season 2. Rebus is returning – gruff, brooding, and as impressive as ever!”

Gregory Burke, the creator of the series, expressed his joy by saying: “I’m thrilled that the BBC and Eleventh Hour Films have given me an opportunity to bring Rebus back on TV screens across the nation again. Ian Rankin’s character and body of work offer a rich canvas for delving into contemporary Scottish society and the tumultuous world that surrounds it.

Earlier on, when discussing the possibility of another season of Rebus, Rankin shared with the BBC before the debut: “I fervently wish that viewers appreciate as deeply as we intended.

I’ll share my thoughts: “I must say, every actor and crew member involved in this series is incredibly skilled, and they truly gave it their all. It’s evident on the screen. Here’s hoping our viewers get hooked, because we’ve got even more thrilling stories lined up for them in the future!

“I really hope that people will fall in love with Rebus in the same way that we have.”

It seems that the audience has developed quite an affection for it, setting the stage for even more. As of now, there’s no specified date or production period announced, but just as with season 1, we can expect Rebus season 2 to be shot in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Rebus is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
