DC Studios is off to a strong start with James Gunn’s Superman, and a sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is already planned. While the future of Superman is clear, the roles of Wonder Woman and Batman are still uncertain. When Batman eventually appears in the new DC Universe, he’ll likely be joined by Robin, and actor Mason Thames, known for How to Train Your Dragon, has previously said he’d be thrilled to play the part. ComicBook recently spoke with Thames about the possibility of playing Robin in this new DCU compared to the previous films, what superheroes initially sparked his interest in comics, and the excitement of seeing Robin return to the big screen.
Brenton Thwaites, who played Robin, is enthusiastic about the potential for the character to return in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. He’s been a fan of Robin for a while and believes a new film could really explore the fantastical world of Batman and Gotham. He notes that Robin hasn’t been a major focus on the big screen – aside from brief appearances in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and the ‘Titans’ series – and feels there’s a great opportunity to do something special with the character. Thwaites expressed his trust in Gunn’s vision, saying he believes Gunn consistently delivers quality work, even if he isn’t involved in the project himself.

Thames is a big fan of the creativity and scope found in comic books, and he believes successful adaptations can lead to amazing films like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and Matt Reeves’ The Batman – both of which quickly gained a large following. “I’ve always been passionate about comic books,” Thames explained. “I specifically remember watching the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies – the first three – over and over at my grandparents’ house. And I saw The Batman in theaters four times in a row with my dad!”
There’s just something magical about getting lost in a story, especially at the movies. Seeing the new Superman film, for example, really filled me with hope, and that’s exactly what a great movie should do! I think that’s true of comics in general – they really have something for everyone. Whatever you’re in the mood for, whether it’s a scary thriller, a sweet romance, or an epic adventure, you can find it in a comic book. Honestly, they feel like a really safe and comforting place to escape to.
The world of comics has recently seen a surge in DC’s Absolute Books, which are impressively large and creatively ambitious. Artist James Thames is a big fan of the risks DC is taking with these books. He was particularly struck by the initial design of the Joker, noting the incredible detail even in the character’s jacket. Thames appreciates the freedom comic books offer and is excited to see new interpretations of classic heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. He’s especially intrigued by the current take on the Flash (Wally West) and the way DC is deconstructing Batman – stripping away core elements of the character to explore what remains. He finds this experimentation truly fascinating.
There’s a possibility Thames could play Robin in a future movie – many fans think he’d be a great fit for the role. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but you can currently see Thames in The Black Phone 2 and the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon, both available to rent or stream.
