Guy Ritchie Drops Out of Major Streaming Sequel Just Two Months Before Filming Starts

Approximately two months following his appointment to oversee the next installment of a contentious action reboot, director Guy Ritchie has departed from the production. At present, Ritchie is still scheduled to direct “Wife And Dog” and “In The Grey,” and there are ongoing whispers about a third movie in his Sherlock Holmes series (though he may not be the one behind the camera). For now, it appears that Ritchie has freed up some space in his calendar. No explanation has been given for this unexpected departure.

According to Variety’s report, it remains unclear why the director chose to step down from the sequel of Road House. Initially, Ritchie agreed to direct the film in late April. The sequel produced by Amazon MGM is anticipated to begin production and shooting from September onwards. Will Beall, who has previously worked on movies like “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”, “Aquaman”, and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F”, is penning the script for this project.

With Richie leaving the project, it’s uncertain how his departure will affect the progress of “Road House 2”. Dave Bautista, who plays a role in the sequel of “Guardians of the Galaxy”, had agreed to join the cast in June. However, with Richie no longer directing, it’s unknown if Bautista will still be involved. Jake Gyllenhaal is set to play the lead character, Dalton, a former UFC fighter facing financial struggles. Gyllenhaal is also a producer on the project, along with Josh McLaughlin, through his Nine Stories Productions banner. Additionally, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner from Atlas Entertainment are producing the sequel.

The revamped version of Amazon’s “Road House” has experienced an uneven yet thriving transition to television. Initially met with controversy, given the original movie’s status as a cult favorite starring Patrick Swayze, it swiftly gained popularity on the streaming platform upon its premiere. The remake garnered 80 million viewers worldwide in just eight weeks, setting new records for Amazon’s Prime Video. Regrettably, however, the reboot’s director, Doug Liman, expressed dissatisfaction with the film’s release due to plans for a theatrical release that ultimately didn’t materialize.

In a fresh take on the original “Road House”, Dalton, portrayed by Gyllenhaal, takes on a bouncer role at a Florida Keys bar to make ends meet. However, his peaceful life is disrupted when he’s drawn into a conflict involving lawless gangs, bike groups, and a wealthy developer intent on constructing a luxurious resort for the elite. The movie additionally features Daniela Melchior, Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen, Post Malone, Jessica Williams, and Lukas Gage.

Ritchie has directed several notable films such as the record-breaking live-action version of Aladdin for Disney, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Sherlock Holmes, RocknRolla, and Fountain of Youth. Currently, he’s linked to the upcoming sequel Aladdin 2, but there’s no clarity on its development, as well as his next venture, Wife & Dog, which features Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins in the leading roles.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the reboot of the iconic movie “Road House” is exclusively available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. However, there seems to be a pause in the production pipeline as we search for a new director to guide the sequel. In the meantime, eager fans can relive the original “Road House” magic by streaming it now on either HBO Max or Amazon Prime Video.
