Prime Video Just Added One of Dreamworks’ Best Animated Franchises (But One Movie Is Missing)

DreamWorks Animation has created many beloved and memorable animated films over the years. The studio has become a major player in the animation industry with popular movies like Antz, How to Train Your Dragon, and Bee Movie, some of which have spawned entire franchises. Recently, one of DreamWorks’ most popular series – aside from Shrek – became available on Prime Video, though fans may still need to look elsewhere to find all the movies in that series.

Several movies from the Madagascar series are now available to stream on Prime Video. The films follow Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo – four zoo animals who unexpectedly end up on the island of Madagascar after escaping from captivity. Madagascar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and the spin-off Penguins of Madagascar became available on December 1st. However, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, the last movie in the main series, is not currently included.

Madagascar Is One of DreamWorks’ Most Successful Non-Shrek Series

The Madagascar series began in 2005 as one of DreamWorks’ first major animated franchises after the success of Shrek. It quickly became a popular and well-received series on its own. The first three Madagascar movies earned almost $2 billion globally, with Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted proving the most successful at the box office, bringing in $747 million worldwide and receiving a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s clear why the Madagascar movies are so beloved. Each film is incredibly entertaining, and the first three movies especially boast memorable characters with big personalities. The story arc is well-developed, starting with the animals trying to survive and get back to civilization, and eventually becoming a journey to discover where they truly belong – all while delivering lots of laughs and excitement.

Despite receiving generally positive reviews (a 75% critic score and 63% audience rating), Penguins of Madagascar didn’t perform well in theaters. With a worldwide gross of $373 million, it earned significantly less than the previous three Madagascar films. This, along with changes happening at DreamWorks Animation in 2015, likely led to the cancellation of Madagascar 4 and the end of the main Madagascar movie series.

Where to Stream the Rest of the Madagascar Franchise?

While Prime Video only has a few of the Madagascar movies, you can still watch the whole series. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is streaming on The Roku Channel, and you can also rent or buy it online – even through Prime Video.

As a big fan of the Madagascar movies, I’ve also kept up with the TV shows! The first one, The Penguins of Madagascar, was hilarious and ran for three seasons, starting in 2008. Right now, you can only find it on The Roku Channel. Then there was All Hail King Julien, a prequel that was really funny too, but you’ll have to rent or buy the episodes. And if you’re looking for something new, Madagascar: A Little Wild shows the gang as kids at the Central Park Zoo – it’s super cute, and you can stream it on Hulu, Disney+, and Peacock.
