‘Zootopia 2’ Will Pass $1 Billion in December for Disney

Nine years after Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde solved their first case together, the sequel is demonstrating that follow-up films can still be incredibly successful. After a record-breaking opening weekend over Thanksgiving, earning $556 million, the movie has now surpassed $900 million worldwide, securing Disney’s second billion-dollar hit of the year. With Avatar: Fire and Ash also expected to easily reach the billion-dollar mark in just a few weeks, Disney is poised to achieve this feat for the second time in two years.

In 2019, Disney had an impressive eight films earn over $1 billion at the box office. However, in the following six years, including the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, only six Disney movies reached that milestone, with three of those successes happening just this year. While it’s taken some time for Disney to regain its momentum – and they’ve had some misses along the way – the three big hits of 2024 prove that when Disney delivers, it really excels.

Zootopia 2 is doing incredibly well in China, helping it climb to third place among the highest-grossing films worldwide this year. Unlike many other movies that haven’t resonated with audiences in Asia, Zootopia 2 made over $100 million in a single day – a first for any Hollywood film – and broke the record for the biggest opening weekend at the Chinese box office. The movie is now on track to earn over $1 billion by the end of the week.

Disney Can Really Step Up as a Dominant Box Office Force in the Next Few Years

After a hugely successful 2024 with three films – Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Moana 2 – each earning over $1 billion at the box office, Disney is poised for more big hits in 2026 and 2027 with a lineup of anticipated blockbusters.

Next year, both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday from Marvel Studios are expected to earn over a billion dollars at the box office. The Mandalorian & Grogu and Toy Story 5 could also reach that milestone. Looking ahead to 2027, Star Wars: Star Fighter, Frozen 3, and Avengers: Secret Wars are projected to be top contenders, and that’s just a glimpse of Disney’s plans to dominate the box office with its most popular franchises.

Disney is working on some new, original movies, but it’s become clear that CEO Bob Iger is right: the biggest profits come from Disney’s well-known franchises. The success of these established brands – like Avatar, Star Wars, and Marvel – has been repeatedly demonstrated in recent years, and this trend is expected to continue. With these franchises dominating Disney’s upcoming schedule, other studios will need to deliver something truly exceptional to challenge Disney’s position as the industry leader.
