Zootopia 2 Overtakes Every Movie in This 23-Year-Old Animated Franchise That’s Getting a New Sequel From Disney

Zootopia 2 is already a huge hit in 2025. After only two weekends, including its release over Thanksgiving, the Disney sequel is expected to surpass the original film and become one of the highest-grossing animated movies ever. This success is thanks to strong reviews (91% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics), overwhelmingly positive audience reactions (a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade from CinemaScore), and a need for a movie the whole family can enjoy.

Currently earning $915 million worldwide, this film is already the fourth-highest-grossing movie of 2025. It’s Disney’s second biggest hit of the year, following the Lilo & Stitch remake, and is quickly climbing the ranks of all-time animated movie box office charts. It’s now among the top 100 highest-grossing films ever made worldwide (without adjusting for inflation), and it has surpassed the total earnings of the entire Ice Age franchise, which Disney now owns. Disney is even continuing the Ice Age series with a new film, Ice Age: Boiling Point, scheduled for release in 2027 through 20th Century Studios.

Movie Year Box Office (Worldwide)
Zootopia 2016 $1.025bn
Zootopia 2 2025 $915m
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 2009 $886m
Ice Age: Continental Drift 2012 $877m
Ice Age: The Meltdown 2006 $660m
Ice Age: Collision Course 2016 $408m
Ice Age 2002 $383m

Zootopia 2 Is Destined For $1 Billion – And A Sequel

The sequel to Zootopia is expected to surpass several popular animated films at the box office. It’s likely to earn more than Shrek 2 ($932 million), Finding Nemo ($941 million), and The Lion King ($979 million). With only $85 million more needed, breaking $1 billion in total earnings is almost certain. This would make it the third film this year – following Ne Zha 2 and Lilo & Stitch – and the 14th animated movie ever to reach that milestone, joining the original Zootopia on the list.

If the film reaches $1 billion in earnings, it will be the second Disney sequel in a row to do so, following the success of Moana 2 last year. This continues a strong pattern, as Frozen II also surpassed that amount, and several Pixar films like Inside Out 2, Toy Story 3 and 4, Incredibles 2, and Finding Dory have achieved the same. This success shows how Disney’s change in strategy – previously releasing sequels directly to DVD – is now paying off at the box office.

Given how well the movie performed, a third Zootopia film is almost certainly going to be made. The ending of Zootopia 2 hinted at potential storylines, and since both films have been very successful financially, Disney will likely want to capitalize on that with another sequel. While Disney animated sequels usually take a few years to produce, a third Zootopia movie might come sooner than the nine-year wait for Zootopia 2. Regardless of when it’s released, it’s expected to be another box office success.

Zootopia 2 is now playing in theaters, while Zootopia is available on Disney+.
