Romantasy is the currently dominating force in genre fiction. This blend of romance and fantasy has exploded in popularity thanks to authors like Sara J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros, and boosted by the BookTok community. The genre’s success is deserved – romantasy stories offer a wide range of exciting elements, from magic and dragons to vampires and apocalyptic scenarios, all woven together with compelling romance, intrigue, and adventure. There really is something for every reader to enjoy.
Like all popular genres, romantasy is gaining traction in film and television. While some adaptations are still in development—like a series based on Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean novels, including Fourth Wing—many more stories are ripe for adaptation, and we have a few ideas in mind. Here are seven books or series we’d love to see become TV shows or movies.
7) The Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

As a huge romantasy fan, I’ve been completely hooked by Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Blood and Ash series – it’s already six books long with one more on the way! It takes the vampire idea and really blends it into this incredible romantic fantasy world. The story centers around Poppy, who’s basically destined to be alone until a major ritual, but then she starts falling for her guard, Hawke. It throws everything into chaos because, seriously, the whole kingdom depends on her, and if the gods deem her unworthy, things could fall apart fast. It’s a lot of pressure, and her growing feelings for Hawke definitely complicate things!
There’s exciting news for fans of the Blood and Ash series: Sony has acquired the rights to adapt it into a show! What makes this series stand out in the romantasy genre is its unique take on vampires and its mature, darker themes. Many believe it has the potential to be the next Game of Thrones, so fans are eager to see it brought to life on screen.
6) The Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard

News came out in 2021 that Peacock was planning a TV series based on Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen books (Red Queen, Glass Sword, King’s Cage, and War Storm), with Beth Schwartz, who worked on Arrow, helping to write the first episode alongside Aveyard. However, there haven’t been any further announcements since then, which is disappointing because many fans, including us, are eager to see this story adapted for the screen.
The novel Red Queen takes place in a divided America where society is split between the common ‘Reds’ and the powerful, elite ‘Silvers.’ It offers a compelling look at social inequality, as the Silvers, who possess supernatural abilities, oppress the Reds. The story is thrown into chaos when Mare Barrow, a Red thief, discovers she also has powers, challenging the idea that Reds are naturally inferior. This makes her a symbol of rebellion and sparks a mystery surrounding the origin of her abilities. It’s a story with a lot of depth and intrigue to explore.
5) The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas

There’s a lot of debate about the best way to read Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series, but most fans agree that The Assassin’s Blade is exceptional and deserves to be adapted for the screen. This prequel, told through five shorter stories, details the beginnings of the assassin Celaena Sardothien’s life. It’s a compelling story filled with romance, intricate relationships, emotional moments, and thrilling adventures, and it explains how she ended up in prison, setting the scene for the rest of the series.
This book works perfectly as both the beginning of a larger series or movie franchise and a satisfying standalone story. Based on five separate novellas, it’s full of interesting plotlines and offers plenty of material for adaptation. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy a thrilling story about an assassin?
4) As Many Souls as Stars by Natasha Siegel

Released just last November, As Many Souls as Stars is a newer title and hasn’t yet built a large following, but it’s definitely worth checking out. The story centers around a witch and an immortal demon who become entangled in a centuries-spanning pursuit after making a dangerous deal. It’s a beautifully written, epic love story that will make you question everything you thought you knew about love and self-preservation.
This book is epic in scope, covering a vast timeline and telling a sweeping love story. Though set in a world resembling our own, the author’s incredible world-building is so vivid that you can easily picture the scenes as you read. That makes the prospect of a live-action adaptation incredibly exciting – we think it would make a fantastic movie!
3) The Shepherd King duology by Rebecca Gillig

The Shepherd King duology, consisting of One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns, centers on Elspeth and her efforts to save her kingdom. Magic in the kingdom comes in two forms: a controlled system using twelve Providence cards, and a dangerous, unpredictable magic linked to a deadly fever. The only cure for the fever – and the key to saving the kingdom – is to collect a complete set of Providence cards. However, Elspeth is haunted by a powerful, ancient spirit called the Nightmare. Her journey becomes even more complicated when she meets a secretive highwayman who is also pursuing his own goals.
As a huge movie fan, I genuinely think The Shepherd King would make an amazing adaptation. Gillig’s magic system is so unique and creative – I haven’t seen anything like it before, and it would look incredible on the big screen. Plus, the series has this really cool, gothic vibe that I think would appeal to a lot of different viewers. It just feels like the next big hit waiting to happen.
2) The Bridge Kingdom series by Danielle L. Jensen

Jensen’s The Bridge Kingdom series currently has five books (The Bridge Kingdom, The Traitor King, The Inadequate Heir, The Endless War, and The Twisted Throne), with a sixth, The Tempest Blade, scheduled for release in 2026. Fans who enjoy epic fantasy like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon will likely love this series. It centers on Lara, a princess trained as a warrior, who is sent to the Bridge Kingdom with the secret mission of overthrowing King Aren. Posing as a peace envoy, she begins to doubt her mission and unexpectedly falls for the king.
The Bridge Series is a captivating story filled with romance, suspense, and exciting action. It features a detailed and politically complex world, with some steamy moments too. Because the series is made up of three shorter pairs of books, there’s a wealth of material to adapt for the screen, and many fantastic stories to tell. It’s a truly immersive world that would translate beautifully to a visual medium.
1) A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Fans were excited when Hulu announced in 2021 that they would be making a TV series based on the popular book, A Court of Thorns and Roses. Unfortunately, Hulu decided to cancel the project earlier this year, disappointing many. However, with Disney’s contract now expired, there’s still a chance the story of Prythian could come to life on screen.
The series A Court of Thorns and Roses, currently five books long with a sixth on the way, centers around Feyre Archeron. After unintentionally killing a magical wolf, she’s pulled into the alluring but perilous realm of the fae. Published in 2015, the series is often cited as a major contributor to the growing popularity of romantasy, and with its rich world-building, compelling characters, and hints of political intrigue reminiscent of Game of Thrones, many fans believe it would make a fantastic live-action adaptation. Fans are eagerly hoping it will happen!
