The 2005 action movie Four Brothers, featuring Mark Wahlberg, is gaining popularity as a free streaming option. While it initially received mixed reviews – earning a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s now finding a new audience.
I was surprised to check Tubi today and see that Four Brothers is currently the number one movie in the US! It’s beating out some serious classics – even The Dark Knight and Batman Begins are further down the list. You’ve also got films like Paid in Full, Patch Adams, Road House, The Untouchables, Grease, Sidelined: The QB and Me, and Invaders from Mars all trailing behind. It’s a bit unexpected, but hey, it shows the staying power of this action flick!
Directed by John Singleton, known for his film Boys n the Hood, Four Brothers stars Mark Wahlberg as one of four adopted brothers. After their adoptive mother is killed in a robbery, the brothers decide to investigate her murder and find the people responsible. As they dig deeper, they realize the case is more complex than they initially thought.
The film stars Mark Wahlberg, along with Tyrese Gibson (known from Fast & Furious), rapper André 3000, and Garrett Hedlund playing the four brothers. The supporting cast includes acclaimed actors Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Sofía Vergara (Modern Family), and Fionnula Flanagan, all of whom have received major award nominations.
When Four Brothers came out, critics had a mixed reaction. While the actors playing the brothers had great chemistry and convincingly portrayed their relationships, many felt the movie relied too much on over-the-top violence. Ultimately, the film tried to cover too much ground and lacked a clear, focused story.
While critics gave the film a mixed rating of 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences really enjoyed Four Brothers, giving it an 80% score. The movie also did well financially, earning $92.5 million at the box office – more than three times its $30 million production cost.
Critics were divided on the movie, but audiences have really connected with it. In fact, it’s recently become popular again, climbing to the top of Tubi’s most-watched list. Even twenty years later, people are enjoying its raw energy and the strong bond between the brothers. It’s definitely worth checking out for free on Tubi and deciding for yourself what you think!
