Just a heads-up: if you’re not caught up with the One Piece manga, this will spoil things! I’ve been following the Elbaph Arc, and it looks like we’re finally getting some closure on the backstory. Right before Luffy’s crew was about to jump into the fight with the Holy Knights, the story shifted to a flashback showing Harald’s life and what led to his death. It’s been revealed that Loki, who everyone thought was the killer, was actually innocent and spent years in prison after being falsely accused. The kingdom has always believed Loki went mad and killed their king, but the truth is far more complex. We’re learning that Harald travelled the world trying to build a better future for the Giants.
Harald sacrificed everything he had to secure a peaceful future for Elbaph, hoping to integrate them with the World Government through education and trade rather than conflict. Unfortunately, the World Government – particularly Imu – had different intentions for the Giants, and Harald walked right into their scheme. Eager to gain the approval of the Five Elders, he complied with all their demands, even accepting a low-ranking position among the Holy Knights. Little did he know, this led to him obtaining an incredible power in the recent chapter, ultimately sealing his destiny.
One Piece Confirms The Power of Immortality Helps Imu Build an Army of Puppets

The manga has established that Imu’s followers, like the Five Elders and Holy Knights, possess self-healing abilities. The Five Elders haven’t aged in a very long time, and the Holy Knights can fully regenerate. In Chapter 1168, Harald was promoted to a higher rank within the Holy Knights after Shanks left, and with this promotion, he received the power of immortality, which he accepted despite being surprised to see someone already sitting on the Empty Throne.
Imu’s power meant complete control, and that was always their intention. Harald willingly accepted the responsibility, but he desperately wanted to protect his kingdom. Even after discovering Imu planned to enslave the entire nation, Harald was powerless to fight back because he was already under Imu’s control. This devastating situation led to his death and, unexpectedly, drew his son, Loki, into the resulting turmoil.
