After long periods of being overlooked, supporters of Green Lantern have been rewarded with significant attention within the DC Universe (DCU), as multiple renowned characters from the comic books have already been announced for the series. Nevertheless, it would be beneficial to also feature lesser-known members of the Corps, apart from the typical Guy Gardner or Hal Jordan, in James Gunn’s upcoming interconnected comic book world.
So far, several active (or previously serving) Lanterns have been verified for the DC Universe, such as Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and the treacherous Sinestro. The ring-wielding hero is also getting his own DC television series in the upcoming “Lanterns” HBO production. However, it’s important to note that the realm of Green Lantern extends far beyond these few heroes, with numerous characters responding to the ring’s summons in DC Comics.
In the forthcoming Superman movie (releasing on July 11), viewers will be introduced to Green Lantern for the first time, as Nathan Fillion breathes life into Guy Gardner within the new DC reboot. Over the coming months, Fillion’s portrayal of Green Lantern can be seen again in multiple projects: Peacemaker Season 2 towards late August and Lanterns at some point during the next year.
7 Green Lanterns Who Deserve To Be in the DCU
Kilowog
As we approach DCU, it seems more a question of when rather than if Kilowog will make his franchise debut. This character is a fan favorite among Green Lanterns in DC Comics history, being a massive alien Bolovaxian who frequently interacts with Earth’s Lanterns.
The first appearance of Kilowog in the DC Universe seems unavoidable, given his significant role within the Green Lantern Corps. He serves as the chief drill sergeant among the intergalactic peacekeepers, implying that any new recruit joining the Lantern team is likely to encounter Kilowog at some point.
Soranik Natu
In simpler terms, Soranik Natu is an alien character who has been introduced as another Green Lantern within the DC Universe. Originally a member of the Corps in the comics, her allegiance shifted from the Green Lantern way, eventually transforming into a significant antagonist to the group of heroic Green Lanterns.
Given that Soranik’s father, Sinestro, is set to appear in James Gunn’s new on-screen universe (which is part of the upcoming Lanterns series), it’s plausible that the half-Korugaran, half-Ungaran character could be a suitable addition to the franchise.
Alan Scott
Although John Stewart, also known as Hal Jordan, often comes to mind when people think of Earth’s main Green Lantern hero, it was actually Alan Scott who first answered the Ring’s call. Unlike most other Lanterns, Alan has a unique origin story. Instead of deriving his power from the Guardians of the Universe, he obtains it from Starheart, a mysterious and experimental weapon.
Currently, there are no Earth-born Green Lanterns missing from the DC Universe. However, an elderly Alan Scott could serve as a charming addition, subtly illustrating the historical significance of the Green Lantern title to viewers at home.
Ch’p
Among the more unusual Green Lantern characters, Ch’p stands out, and that’s what makes him fantastic. Originating from the animal-centric planet H’lven, he bears a resemblance to a humanoid chipmunk, selected as his world’s guardian by the Green Lantern Corps.
Using the same creative flair as demonstrated with characters like Weasel and Rocket Raccoon, Gunn has shown his ability to create an alien animal character that captivates audiences. Hence, one might wonder if he could repeat this success with Ch’p as well.
Sodam Yat
Sodam Yat, a fiery comic book character, could be an entertaining choice for both big and small screens if Gunn and his team consider him. Chosen as the Lantern from Sector 1760, Sodam is a member of the Daxamite species, who possess powers similar to those of a Kryptonian.
In simpler terms, this character possesses the intense heat vision, extraordinary physical power, and almost indestructible body like Superman, as well as the incredible ability to create powerful constructs, similar to a Green Lantern. Such a combination of skills would undoubtedly make him an intriguing addition to the DC Universe.
Jessica Cruz
In the upcoming DC Universe storyline, it’s intriguing to consider introducing another Earth-bound Green Lantern alongside Jessica Cruz. Just like several others before her, Jessica assumes the Green Lantern role, but there are distinct differences that set her apart.
Unlike other humans who boldly wore a Lantern Ring in the past, Jessica struggles with anxiety and never voluntarily accepts the Ring’s proposal. Instead, the Earth-3 Lantern is seized by the ring, which takes full command of her body initially. Eventually, she manages to regain control over the ring’s power.
Kyle Rayner
Kyle Rayner, a distinctive character from Earth, joins the Lantern Corps in the comics. Interestingly, he assumes the role of a Lantern when the Corps has been annihilated, making him the last known Lantern in the universe. Subsequently, he endeavors to rebuild this peacekeeping force and restore the influence of the Lantern’s light throughout the cosmos.
In the evolving DC Universe, it’s not expected that Kyle Rayner will appear soon, given the numerous active Lanterns currently present. However, in the future, following a significant crisis that could potentially deprive the franchise of a Lantern, Kyle Rayner could become an intriguing turning point for the character, offering fresh dynamics and possibilities.
