Stephen King stories are frequently adapted into movies and TV shows, and 2025 saw a lot of them. One adaptation, continues to perform well on streaming services, remaining popular nearly four months after it first launched.
Currently, The Long Walk is the third most popular movie on Starz, according to FlixPatrol. The dystopian horror film initially appeared on the charts on April 25th, starting at number five, and has since climbed to third place.
While The Long Walk isn’t expected to top the charts soon, it’s currently holding a respectable third place since its release on April 1st. Henry Cavill’s action movie, Night Hunter, is performing even better, currently in second place.
What Happens in The Long Walk?
This tense thriller takes place in the 1970s, in a United States that has become a harsh military dictatorship after a devastating civil war. Each year, fifty teenage boys are selected from across the country to compete in a televised event called the ‘Long Walk.’ They must walk for hundreds of miles without stopping, keeping a steady pace of three miles per hour. The last boy still walking wins a substantial cash prize.
This dystopian movie is directed by Francis Lawrence, who also directed The Hunger Games, and written by JT Mollner. It’s based on a 1979 novel by Stephen King, originally published under the name Richard Bachman. The Long Walk was King’s first novel, though Carrie was the first one he actually published.
The cast of The Long Walk includes Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, and Judy Greer.
The scary, futuristic film was one of the last movies released in 2025, appearing right before another film released under the same author’s pen name. Like that other film, The Running Man centers around a TV show where participants are chased by trained killers. If they can survive for a month, they win a large cash prize.
The Long Walk Was a Sleeper Hit
Critics loved The Long Walk, giving it an 88% approval rating and a ‘Certified Fresh’ badge after reviewing it nearly 300 times. They especially praised the acting, particularly from Cooper Hoffman and David Johnsson, as well as the film’s direction and how the story was adapted. Viewers also enjoyed the dystopian horror, awarding it an 85% approval score.
I recently saw The Long Walk, and FilmWeek’s Christy Lemire is right – it’s a tough watch, definitely not for everyone. But be warned, it’s one of those films that really stays with you long after the credits roll.
Despite a relatively small budget of $20 million, the film The Long Walk performed well at the box office, earning over $62.9 million worldwide. This made it a modest commercial success, exceeding its production costs by a significant margin.
The new dystopian horror film has gained significant attention since its digital release. While it’s currently not available on major streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, or Prime Video globally,
The Long Walk is streaming on Starz.
