The original Avengers team was crucial to the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Their first team-up in 2012 really launched the franchise, and it’s been thriving ever since. They remained a central group for four films, culminating in their final adventure, Avengers: Endgame. However, some heroes haven’t fully retired. While Iron Man and Captain America are gone, their actors are returning to the MCU in new roles. Chris Evans reprised his role as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, and Robert Downey Jr. is preparing to play a different version of the character in Avengers: Doomsday, where he’ll portray Doctor Doom. Thor and Hawkeye, along with the Hulk, are also still active as heroes.
Scarlett Johansson, who famously played Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appears to be the first original Avenger fully embracing projects outside of that world. She’s recently signed on to several new franchises, including Jurassic World and The Exorcist, and is now joining DC for The Batman Part II. This makes it a good moment to consider which roles the other original Avengers might take on in the DC Universe.
5) Mark Ruffalo as The Question

Mark Ruffalo is fantastic as Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, really nailing the character’s inner conflict and brilliant mind when he’s not turning into the Hulk. I’ve noticed he consistently gravitates towards roles that let him play smart, complex characters – think about his work in films like Shutter Island and Dark Waters, where there’s always a puzzle to solve. Which got me thinking: he’d be a perfect fit for the DC Universe as The Question. It’s a detective role, gritty and demanding, and I think Ruffalo could absolutely kill it playing a character who isn’t afraid to dig deep and get his hands dirty.
4) Jeremy Renner as Sportsmaster

Okay, so everyone’s talking about Jeremy Renner as Green Arrow for the new DCU, and yeah, he’s clearly got the archery skills down. But honestly, I think there’s a better role for him. Hear me out: Sportsmaster. The guy turns everyday sports equipment into weapons – a baseball bat, a golf club, you name it! – and we haven’t seen him done right in live-action yet. It would let Renner show off those action skills, but with a really fun, different character. He could really own that role and put his own spin on it, which is way more exciting than just being another Green Arrow.
3) Chris Hemsworth as Aquaman

Chris Hemsworth has thrived playing a regal, magical character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it might seem repetitive to cast him in a similar royal role in the DC Universe, he seems perfectly suited for Aquaman. Beyond his appearance, Hemsworth embodies a relaxed, surfer-like vibe that would bring a fun-loving energy to the character, balancing his heroic duties with a desire to enjoy life and protect the seas.
2) Chris Evans as Two-Face

Captain America, as portrayed by Chris Evans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is consistently moral, sometimes to the frustration of his fellow heroes. Evans seems eager to move beyond playing such a purely heroic role, which is why he was excited to reprise his role as the Human Torch and use stronger language. Now, he could get the best of both worlds in the DC Universe by playing Two-Face – a character who begins as a respectable citizen but transforms into a villain obsessed with controlling Gotham.
1) Robert Downey Jr. as Scarecrow

It would be a mistake for the DC Universe to relegate former Avengers stars to supporting roles for Batman, but the idea of Robert Downey Jr. playing Scarecrow is too strong to pass up. He actually auditioned for the part in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy but didn’t get it. Now’s the perfect time to give him another chance – he effortlessly switches between unsettling and sophisticated, making him ideal for the character. No matter who plays Batman in the DCU, they wouldn’t be able to overshadow Downey Jr. on screen.
