Raul Malo, Mavericks Singer, Dead at 60

The Mavericks has lost its lead singer.

Raul Malo, a founding member of the band formed with Paul Deakin, Robert Reynolds, and Ben Peeler in 1989, passed away on December 8th after a fight with colon cancer. He was 60 years old.

Betty Malo shared the news on Instagram that her husband passed away on December 8th, 2025, at 8:52 pm. She described him as a loving father, son, brother, and friend, saying he’s now ‘flying high’ in heaven.

Betty, mother to Raul’s sons Dino, Victor, and Max, shared, “Raul truly lived life to the fullest, embracing love, joy, family, friendship, music, and adventure. Though he’s gone, we’ll feel his presence watching over us, guiding us to appreciate every precious moment.”

Raul received a colon cancer diagnosis in June 2024. Sadly, in September, he revealed the cancer had spread to the membranes around his brain and spinal cord, a condition called Leptomeningeal disease.

I was so moved by what he shared on Facebook. He described the disease as totally unpredictable and said it doesn’t discriminate – a really honest assessment. But what struck me most was his strength. He made it clear he wasn’t facing this alone, and that meant everything to his fans like me. He’s got such an incredible support system – his wife and sons, family, the whole band and crew, and of course, all of us who love his music. He said he couldn’t even begin to express how much love and support he’s receiving, and honestly, it’s beautiful to see.

He admitted they’re unsure what the future holds, but they’re approaching the situation with their usual determination. They’re committed to working hard, bouncing back from challenges, recovering, and then starting the process all over again.

After Raul’s death, his bandmates – including original member Paul, and later additions Eddie Perez and Jerry Dale McFadden – remembered him as a powerfully inspiring person.

After a career spanning over thirty years and entertaining millions worldwide, his incredible musical talent and creativity produced a uniquely American sound that resonated globally. In a statement released on December 9th, they noted that while he has passed away, Raul’s spirit will continue to live on both in heaven and through the happiness and inspiration his music brought to others.

The band shared that Raul’s impact on American and Latin music will be felt forever, noting that his music and voice resonated with people and other musicians globally.
