In the upcoming season of “Dancing With the Stars,” airing this fall according to the 2025 TV schedule, anything can unexpectedly occur given that much of it is broadcast live. This could range from performers getting hurt, botching dance moves, or even experiencing wardrobe mishaps – incidents that may happen more frequently than one might anticipate. However, the show persists regardless, offering a mix of awkward and thrilling moments to its viewers.
20 years ago, Kelly Monaco – the first season winner of DWTS – reminisced about her journey on the show with Entertainment Weekly. As it was a fresh concept, nobody knew exactly what to anticipate, not even the celebrity contestants. However, there were precautions in place for possible wardrobe mishaps, and thanks to her partner Alec Mazo, the actress from General Hospital was well-prepared for any surprises that might come up.
Alec was extremely demanding and always ensured I was ready for any challenge. He’d intentionally present hurdles for us to overcome, so I was well-prepared – though it was absolutely terrifying.
Back in Week 4, as Mazo and I danced the samba to Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailamos”, a glitch occurred. Somehow, Monaco stumbled during our performance. Thankfully, I managed to maintain my composure on stage, and we walked away with a score of 26 out of 30, just shy of three perfect 9s. To this day, that hiccup in our routine remains etched in my memory. I honestly don’t know how I would have made it through without the unwavering support of my partner by my side.
In simpler terms, during a live performance, something unexpected happened to my costume just before we started dancing with Alec. It seemed like someone had shot my outfit with a laser from a distance of about five miles. I was momentarily confused, thinking there might be a way to pause or stop the show, but found none. With no other choice, I decided to hold up my dress while we danced. Despite the mishap, Alec stood by me and I felt incredibly confident throughout the dance, receiving a standing ovation in the end.
Understanding exactly how Monaco felt in that moment of wardrobe malfunction offers a clear insight into what others might experience in similar situations. It’s remarkable how Mazo seemed to anticipate every possible eventuality, even during the first season – a testament to his preparation skills. Tom Bergeron admired Monaco’s composure under pressure, and if he could have, he would have awarded her the Mirrorball trophy on the spot.
Almost half of her front collapsed, necessitating her to support it with a strap. That act alone earned her the victory.
During a live performance, experiencing a mishap might not be ideal, but it often draws attention from the judges – especially when the performer manages to maintain the beat and stay focused despite the error. This is exactly what Monaco did, which resulted in her earning a relatively high score, and she’s well aware of that fact too.
As a devoted cinephile, I couldn’t help but notice and appreciate the exceptional performance I just witnessed. The discerning judges seemed to echo my sentiments, nodding in agreement as they acknowledged, “Yes, we too saw what unfolded on screen. Your approach to that scene was nothing short of remarkable.
Watching “Dancing With the Stars” being live-broadcast adds an exciting element to the show, as we get to see how the contestants and professionals deal with the pressure. Even though wardrobe mishaps can happen anywhere, Kelly Monaco managed it elegantly in the first season, which likely contributed to her winning.
As Season 34 of “Dancing with the Stars” approaches on ABC this autumn, and it’s available to stream with a Hulu membership, we can only guess what surprises are in store and who else might compete for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. Perhaps they’re even preparing for a possible wardrobe mishap, because you never know what twists and turns might occur!
