In recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been experimenting with different characters, seeing what resonates with audiences. With many of the original Avengers departing, lesser-known heroes are taking center stage. Remarkably, a group once considered B-list, the Thunderbolts, have risen to become the new iteration of the Avengers. This team will take the limelight when Avengers: Doomsday premieres in 2026. They won’t be working alone, though, as the Fantastic Four and a revamped X-Men group are also part of these events, guaranteeing an impressive arsenal to counteract Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom.
In the upcoming fifth Avengers film, Captain America’s team will be involved, though the specific members remain a secret. However, given the caliber of the team, it’s likely that Thor will be among them. Having Captain America present will certainly provide comfort to everyone. But, eventually, Sam Wilson won’t continue as the shield-bearer forever. Marvel is already planning for the time when he’ll pass on the mantle.
Marvel Comics Has a New Captain America
In contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Marvel Comics has a unique approach due to its flexibility on the written page. For instance, various iterations of Spider-Man can simultaneously coexist within New York City. Similarly, Captain America, particularly Sam Wilson in the comics, encounters scenarios where multiple versions exist. Interestingly, both Steve Rogers and his former partner possess their own shields without causing any complications because there’s an abundance of villains to battle. Now, another Marvel Comics character is joining the fray in Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s fresh take on Captain America.
In a fresh retelling, Captain America #1 introduces a contemporary twist on Steve Rogers’ tale, as he emerges from thawing just before present times and finds himself in an alien world. Swiftly resuming his duties, he adopts a new suit and focuses on a mischievous antagonist. Yet, Captain America isn’t the sole hero gracing this story; there’s David Colton, a soldier who enlisted following the 9/11 attacks and received the Super-Soldier Serum. Growing up in a more pessimistic era, David carries a unique perspective compared to Steve, which could add an intriguing layer if brought to life on screen by the MCU.
The MCU Could Use a Hero Like David Colton
Absolutely, it’s likely that Sam will continue his journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time yet. He’s just finding his footing now and preparing to reassemble the Avengers. But, similar to Captain America, he may eventually yearn for something more than combat in his life. David could be an ideal choice to take over the role, given his background within the MCU and the hardships he’s faced. He might also be motivated by the impactful work that Sam and Steve have accomplished over the years and aim to contribute positively in return.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that one aspect that excites me about the upcoming “Captain America” film is the introduction of Doctor Doom as David’s initial formidable foe. In this storyline, Victor von Doom seizes control over Latveria, which catapults him onto the U.S.’s watchlist. Partnering with Steve, David embarks on a mission to subdue Doom, and given the villain’s historical track record, it’s clear that this won’t be an effortless battle. Standing tall at 6 feet 8 inches and packing quite a wallop, I have no doubt that David will hold his ground. However, this fight is about much more than just physical combat; Zdarsky and the team are delving into thought-provoking themes concerning the essence of heroism and reality. With Steve as his ally, David finds himself right in the midst of it all, potentially paving the way for himself to join the illustrious ranks of big-screen Captain Americas.
