For many Batman fans, Kevin Conroy was the voice of the Dark Knight. Now, those who loved his portrayal don’t have to strain to hear it – his performance is readily available and continues to live on.
Voice actor Aleks Le created an audio version of a scene from Absolute Batman #13, sharing it on Twitter (now X). He performed the role of Batman, aiming for a voice similar to the iconic Kevin Conroy.
A nearly two-minute video, edited by Diego Woods and narrated by Frank Todaro as a news anchor, recreates a dramatic scene from a recent installment of the popular series. In the video, Batman takes over a local news broadcast to initially address the citizens of Gotham about the city’s corrupt leaders.
However, the speech eventually turns into a direct threat to Bane, the criminal who almost defeated Batman, with Batman promising to deliver a harsh beating. The clip ends with a flawless delivery of the iconic line: “I’m Batman.”
But the video doesn’t stop there. Le also adds a fun extra clip where he imitates how Bruce Wayne would sound as portrayed in Absolute Batman. It doesn’t sound much like Kevin Conroy’s famous performance, but it does sound more like a young man in his early twenties, which is how Bruce is shown in the comic.
Kevin Conroy, who sadly passed away in 2022 at age 66 from cancer, was the voice of Batman for many fans across numerous animated series and films. He famously voiced the character in the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series in the 1990s, and continued to do so even after his death, with a final appearance in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three released in 2024. He also had a unique role portraying an older, disillusioned Bruce Wayne on the TV show Batwoman, as part of the larger Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline.
Aleks Le is an award-winning voice actor known for his roles in popular projects like the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and the animated film Ne Zha, including its sequel. He also recently voiced Batman in the 2024 interactive streaming series, DC Heroes United.
What Is Going On In Absolute Batman?
In a social media post about his Absolute Batman tribute video, Le shared that the series reignited his love for comics, and he’s definitely not alone. Even fans who have been reading comics for years are captivated by author Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta’s new and exciting take on the stories of Gotham City.
The latest installment of the Absolute Batman series, issue #15, introduces a villain even more terrifying than Batman’s usual foe, the Joker. Artists Jock, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles visually transform this character into a monstrous, demonic figure with features like horns, a long tongue, and sharp teeth, creating a truly frightening presence.
Absolute Batman is part of a new series launched in 2024 by Snyder, called the Absolute Universe. This series offers fresh and imaginative takes on well-known DC characters, including Superman and Wonder Woman. In this version of the story, Bruce Wayne is a twenty-something from a middle-class background, and his mother is still living. He grew up with childhood friends Harvey Dent and Oswald Cobblepot, and unexpectedly teams up with Alfred Pennyworth, a tough and experienced former soldier.
Absolute Batman #15 is in stores now.
