Verity Finally Has a Release Date—And It’s Sooner Than You Think

Verity the movie is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Featuring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett, the romantic thriller based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel with the same title is set for a theater release on October 2, 2026, as reported by Deadline.

Fans probably won’t be surprised by this news since Hathaway announced in April that filming had been completed. She shared a video on Instagram and captioned it, “It’s official… wrapping up the production for the #VerityMovie!

During filming, viewers got sneak peeks at upcoming events on screen. In February, Hathaway and Hartnett were observed shooting what seemed to be their characters Verity and Jeremy’s first encounter in New York City. At that moment, the duo was seen holding hands and giggling as they entered a limousine.

In the coming month, Hartnett filmed a crucial sequence where Johnson’s character, Lowen, sees a cyclist collide with a vehicle, leaving Lowen covered in blood.

Under the guidance of director Michael Showalter, the film adaptation of Verity is forthcoming, marking Hoover’s second novel to be brought to life on the silver screen, following 2024’s It Ends With Us, which featured Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni in lead roles.

The story revolves around ghostwriter Lowen Ashleigh, who’s recruited by Jeremy Crawford to complete the successful book series penned by his acclaimed writer wife Verity Crawford, following an incident that prevents her from continuing the work.

After settling with the Crawfords, Lowen discovers Verity’s incomplete memoir filled with stunning revelations. At first, she chooses to keep this manuscript hidden from Jeremy. However, as she grows fond of him, her initial decision wavers.

“I’m basically the bad guy,” Johnson told Deadline in May of her role. “It’s so fun.”

Let me tell you, prior to receiving the script, I was completely unfamiliar with ‘Verity’. However, it’s adapted from a Colleen Hoover novel that seems to have quite a following – and boy, people sure do seem smitten with it!

Amazon MGM Studios announced in November 2024 that the star of The Devil Wears Prada is set to play the lead role in Verity. Although Anne Hathaway has not yet publicly commented on the casting, she was spotted on the film’s set in February 2025.

In an interview with Bustle in March 2024, she expressed that many individuals share her reading habits and belong to book clubs. However, she often felt unique in her approach to books, stating, ‘My way of reading books is unlike anyone else’s.’ She yearns for an immersive experience whenever she reads, aiming to fully engage with the book, its language, and its references.

Concurrently with the announcement of Dakota’s casting, it was also disclosed that Josh Hartnett, known for his role in Black Hawk Down, would assume the character of Jeremy Crawford. Similar to his fellow cast members, he has remained secretive about the project Verity. However, footage of him filming alongside Anne was captured in February. Following the unveiling of the three principal actors, Colleen expressed her feelings about the cast, expressing on Instagram in December that “excited is far from sufficient.

Michael Showalter has returned to the director’s role, as reported by Variety. He is currently directing and producing Verity alongside Anne, Colleen, Dakota, and others. Showalter and Anne have previously collaborated, with their most recent project being the 2024 film adaptation of The Idea of You. Nick Antosca, known for his work on TV shows like Candy and The Act, is the current scriptwriter for Verity. Previous drafts were written by Colleen, Lauren Levine, Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, Will Honley, and April Maguire.
