Tate McRae Details “Really Scary” Part of The Kid Laroi Breakup

Tate McRae is genuinely sorry that people loved this.

The singer of “Sports Car” says she’ll still acknowledge her past relationships, but she recently opened up about her breakup with The Kid Laroi. She admitted they were surprised by how much attention their split received.

She described the experience as frightening and incredibly difficult, telling Rolling Stone in a December 11th interview that she’d never discuss anyone’s personal life in that way, not even her friends’. She hadn’t anticipated how upsetting it would be to have her private life become public, emphasizing that everyone’s story is more complex than what others see.

Although Tate acknowledged she was struggling emotionally after her split from the singer of “Stay,” she denied rumors that their songs, “Tit for Tat” and “A Cold Play,” were written about each other.

She added that she dislikes when people exaggerate problems. However, she’s come to accept that both she and her ex-partner will continue to write songs about their experiences—it’s how they create and work. Once those songs are released, she recognizes she no longer has control over how they’re interpreted.

Tate doesn’t plan to explain the meaning behind her popular song, but she was excited to receive praise from Taylor Swift. Swift mentioned the song during an October episode of The Tonight Show, which Tate described as an incredibly cool experience.

The 22-year-old shared that this writer is a huge inspiration to her, both creatively and as a woman working in the field. She was particularly touched that the writer recognized her work.

Regarding her current relationship with The Kid Laroi (whose real name is Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard), Tate consistently speaks respectfully of her former partner.

I’m a very sentimental person. Once someone has been a part of my life, I never truly forget them or stop feeling connected to them. I carry everyone I’ve known with me. I genuinely love people and always want the best for them. It’s difficult when relationships end, though, because you never know what someone else is going through. I guess time will tell what happens.
