Marvel Rereleasing Avengers: Endgame in Theaters Might Spoil Doomsday’s Biggest Twist

It’s common for movies to return to cinemas after their initial release. These rereleases let longtime fans relive cherished memories and introduce classics to new audiences on the big screen, instead of just at home. Warner Bros. Discovery frequently uses this strategy with films like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. While Disney releases a lot of new content yearly, they also find value in bringing older favorites back to theaters.

Disney, which owns 20th Century Studios, needs to keep showing the Avatar movies so audiences can see them as they were meant to be seen. The company also values anniversaries – the original Star Wars film will return to cinemas for its 50th in 2027. In 2026, Disney plans to re-release Avengers: Endgame in theaters leading up to the launch of Avengers: Doomsday. However, this could unintentionally strengthen a rumor about the new Marvel movie.

Avengers: Doomsday Could Cover Familiar Ground Right Out of the Gate

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been hearing a lot about why they’re really pushing Endgame right now, and it’s more than just about making money. It feels like they’re reminding us just how amazing the MCU can be as the Multiverse Saga is coming to a close. But there’s this interesting rumor going around that they actually want to connect Endgame directly to the upcoming Doomsday movie – almost like a sequel! It’s a bit confusing at first, considering all the movies and shows that have come out since Endgame, and it’s hard to see how they’d tie everything together. Still, I’ve heard there’s at least one way Doomsday could build a connection and make it work.

The ending of Endgame gives Captain America a fulfilling life with Peggy Carter, but his time travel to achieve this is arguably the biggest disruption to the established rules of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed the dangers of altering timelines, and Captain America seemingly disregarded those warnings. This could cause problems in future films like Doomsday, potentially leading Doctor Doom to interfere with Steve and Peggy’s happy life and challenge the Avengers across different realities.

The MCU Would Be Smart to Pick and Choose What It Takes From the Multiverse Saga

Continuing the story of the Avengers immediately after the fourth film doesn’t seem like a strong idea. The Multiverse Saga was intended to be a fresh start, focusing on a new group of heroes. But Phases 4 and 5 haven’t been very successful, making a direct continuation feel even less appealing. Originally, Kang was planned as the main villain for this saga, with heroes like Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, and Shang-Chi leading the fight against him. However, due to various factors – not just Jonathan Majors’ exit – that plan has changed.

The current Multiverse Saga is struggling and may need help from familiar faces – like the Russo brothers, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Evans – to succeed. Marvel Studios seems willing to do whatever it takes, even repeating that strategy with Avengers: Secret Wars, if that’s what it takes to finish the saga. Only then will Marvel feel comfortable taking bigger risks and introducing new characters like the X-Men, who don’t have established histories within the MCU.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
