Martin Compston, understandably, isn’t sharing any details about the next season of Line of Duty. Filming for the highly anticipated seventh season is expected to start in spring 2026.
The team now works for a police standards unit, following the closure of AC-12. However, tackling corruption is proving harder than ever, and they’ve just been given their most challenging case to date.
I’ve been following the case of Detective Inspector Dominic Gough, and it’s shocking. He’s been praised for taking down so many criminal organizations, but now he’s being accused of terrible things – abusing his power and being a sexual predator. It all feels…off, though. I can’t shake the feeling that this whole thing might be a smokescreen, and there’s something even more dangerous happening behind the scenes that everyone’s missing.

Despite leaving some questions unanswered at the end of season 6 – which was watched by an impressive 12.8 million people and captured a 56.2% audience share – Compston indicated that those questions will probably be answered in the future.
He explained that the show will feature a compelling new story with fresh characters, and will also finally provide answers to questions raised in other shows.
Compston didn’t reveal any details about which parts of the storyline Jed Mercurio, the show’s creator, writer, and executive producer, has reworked, but Mercurio expressed his excitement about coming back to the project.
He jokingly said that with the popular show Line of Duty no longer airing, he’d had to rely on his imagination to believe corruption had stopped in the country, following the news that season 7 was being made.

We’ve answered the biggest unanswered questions, including the reason behind Hastings’ spelling mistake – he wrote ‘definitely’ as ‘definately’. This error was crucial in exposing Buckells, a revelation that initially stunned actor Nigel Boyle, who thought the former detective superintendent was simply being used.
He explained that not every bad actor is a brilliant criminal. Sometimes, wrongdoing isn’t the result of clever planning, but simply carelessness and people ignoring problems when they see them.
I always thought Buckells was just there for laughs, so it’s surprisingly smart that he turned out to be the culprit. When you go back and watch everything again, it really shows how well it was planned. Everything makes sense in retrospect, though some viewers still aren’t convinced Buckells is truly the mastermind and believe someone else is still pulling the strings.
The next season of Line of Duty has the potential to be great, but to truly succeed, Jed Mercurio needs to tie up some important unanswered questions from previous seasons, or the story could fall apart.
