The Odyssey New Footage Description: Here’s What’s in the 6-Minute IMAX Prologue (& How To Watch It)

Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, is now playing in theaters, starting with a nearly six-minute prologue. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and he’s joined by a stellar cast including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. While the full movie isn’t out until July 17, 2026, a short teaser was released earlier this summer, and now audiences can see the first six minutes in IMAX theaters.

The first six minutes of the story act as an introduction to The Odyssey, depicting the final moments of the Trojan War. It opens with the question, “You hear the story of the horse?” and then shows a stunning image of the Trojan horse being pulled into Troy by the Trojans themselves. There’s a tense scene where a Trojan soldier tests the horse’s safety by stabbing it with a spear, accidentally wounding a hidden soldier inside – Odysseus quickly silences him to prevent an alarm. Finally, the Trojans bring the horse within the city walls, leaving it near a temple.

As darkness fell, the Greek soldiers secretly climbed out of the Trojan Horse through a hidden opening, quickly killing the nearby guards. The costumes clearly distinguish the two sides: the Trojans wear all-white uniforms and masks, erasing any sense of individual identity. Meanwhile, Odysseus and his men are dressed in dark armor, ideal for sneaking around undetected. The Trojans do raise the alarm, but it’s too late to stop the Greeks from opening the city gates. The scene concludes with Odysseus putting on his helmet, ready to join the fierce battle that has erupted throughout the city.

The video then shows quick glimpses of exciting action on the ocean, hinting at the larger adventure that awaits beyond Troy. It ends with a striking image of a massive and imposing cyclops.

How To Watch The Odyssey Prologue

The opening six minutes of The Odyssey are exclusive to IMAX theaters for one week, playing alongside the IMAX rerelease of Sinners and One Battle After Another. A shorter, one-minute preview will also be shown before Avatar: Fire and Ash, but if you miss it this week, the full scene won’t be available again until July. This release plan aligns with director Christopher Nolan’s preference for the immersive experience of 70mm IMAX screens.

What The Odyssey IMAX Prologue Reveals About Nolan’s Epic

It’s fascinating to think about what could have been! Apparently, Christopher Nolan was once considered to direct the 2004 film Troy, which would have essentially been the story of The Odyssey. Seeing his six-minute prologue feels like a glimpse into a much better version of that movie – a version directed by a more experienced Nolan, someone who really understands epic storytelling. Honestly, it’s clear this prologue is far superior to anything Wolfgang Petersen, who ultimately directed Troy, could have delivered back then. It’s just a shame we never got to see Nolan’s vision!

The first six minutes of The Odyssey immediately highlight Nolan’s masterful filmmaking and his talent for creating epic visuals. Several scenes are genuinely breathtaking, particularly when the Trojan Horse is pulled into the city – the sheer number of people struggling with it is a powerful image. The film also effectively puts you inside the experience of Odysseus and his men, showing their disorientation and struggle within the horse itself. It’s all visually stunning and suggests that The Odyssey will be one of the most visually impressive films of 2026.
