The First 10 Classic Guardians of the Galaxy, Ranked by Power

Long before the Guardians of the Galaxy we know from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was an earlier team from the 31st century. Many of these original Guardians possessed incredible powers, far beyond those of the current team. This first group appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in 1969 and came from a future Earth (Earth-691). They initially formed as a band of survivors fighting off an invasion of the solar system by the Badoon, which is how they got their name. Over time, the team grew and eventually teamed up with the Avengers from our main Marvel universe (Earth-616) to fight even greater threats.

The very first version of the Guardians of the Galaxy actually had ten members, and they weren’t all equally powerful. If you enjoy the Guardians movies directed by James Gunn, it’s worth exploring the comics to discover the team that started it all.

10) Nikki

Nikki Gold is a genetically engineered human created to live on the harsh planet Mercury. First appearing in Marvel Presents #4 in 1976, she became one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy after the Badoon empire attacked Mercury and killed her family. While she doesn’t have traditional superpowers, Nikki has enhanced vision and physical abilities, along with a strong resistance to heat and radiation. She’s a skilled fighter, both with her hands and with weapons, but compared to the other original Guardians, she’s generally considered the least powerful.

9) Yondu Udonta

Yondu Udonta is a fan-favorite Guardian of the Galaxy, largely because of his appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. It’s important to note that while this Yondu shares a name and species with another version, he’s a distinct character. This Yondu is the last of his kind, a skilled warrior with incredibly sharp senses. He began as a hunter and possesses natural mystical abilities. Though deeply connected to the natural world, he’s primarily a highly skilled, peak-human warrior known for his hunting prowess, and doesn’t have any superpowers. Despite this, he remains a key founding member – one of the original four – of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

8) Talon

Talon is an Inhuman with cat-like features who trained under Krugarr, the Sorcerer Supreme from the 31st century. He was one of the original ten Guardians of the Galaxy, first appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy #18 in 1991. Talon possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance, and agility, along with incredibly sharp claws that can be launched as weapons and quickly regenerate. He also uses a magical amulet to enhance his combat skills. While powerful, Talon’s inherent magical ability isn’t as strong – he once attempted to use the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, but couldn’t master them.

7) Charlie-27

Charlie-27 is the strongest member of the team. Originally appearing in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in 1969, he hails from Jupiter. Like the other original members, he was created through genetic engineering to withstand Jupiter’s difficult environment. This gives him eleven times the muscle mass of an average person, allowing him to lift approximately five tons on Earth. A skilled fighter and pilot, Charlie-27 leads the Guardians in both ground and space battles. He’s also incredibly tough, able to resist bullets and even strong energy attacks.

6) Martinex

Martinex is a genetically created being originally designed to live on Pluto. He’s the sole remaining member of his kind after the Badoon invaded the solar system. First appearing in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in 1969, he was a key founder of the Guardians of the Galaxy. His unique physiology, featuring skin made of crystalline silicon, allows him to survive in harsh environments and grants him incredible strength, resilience, and endurance. He can also project powerful energy beams from his body, controlling their temperature. Extremely durable and highly intelligent, Martinex is a vital asset to the Guardians.

5) Vance Astro (Major Victory)

Vance Astro was an astronaut from the 20th century who unexpectedly traveled to the 31st century while in suspended animation during a mission to Alpha Centauri. He’s a mutant with the ability to move objects with his mind and fire powerful energy blasts. Eventually, he became known as Major Victory after proving himself worthy to carry Captain America’s shield. He also wears a special suit that makes him incredibly durable, protects him from illness and injury, and helps him survive in even the most dangerous environments.

4) Replica

Replica is a Skrull—an alien species often facing prejudice throughout the galaxy—who grew up on the planet Haven and was raised with the teachings of the Universal Church of Truth. She kept her true identity a secret for years due to the widespread persecution of Skrulls. Eventually, she hid aboard the Guardians of the Galaxy’s ship. After Yondu discovered her, she became a member when the team expanded. Replica is a particularly powerful Skrull, able to shapeshift into anything without size limitations and even mimic the abilities of super-powered individuals, much like the Super Skrull. This shapeshifting ability made her an incredibly valuable spy for the Guardians.

3) Hollywood (elder Wonder Man)

The character Wonder Man, originally created for Marvel’s Avengers in 1964, is remarkably long-lived. Because he’s virtually immortal, he continued to be a hero even 1,000 years later, in the 31st century. He became a member of the Galactic Guardians, a larger cosmic team that evolved from the original Guardians of the Galaxy. Known as one of the Avengers’ strongest members, Wonder Man maintained that power level in the future, possessing strength comparable to Thor and utilizing his ionic abilities to remain a formidable force.

2) Starhawk

Starhawk is actually two people combined: Stakar Ogord, the son of Quasar and Kismet, and his adopted sister, Aleta Ogord. They were brought together and transformed into a powerful, mystical being by an ancient god. Because of his unique fate – being forced to relive his life over and over – Starhawk has precognitive abilities and knows what’s going to happen. He can also control light, using it to create powerful energy blasts, heat, and even solid objects. Stakar first appeared in the comic book Defenders #27 in 1975.

1) Phoenix IX (Giraud)

Giraud is arguably the strongest of the first ten Guardians of the Galaxy, primarily because he once hosted the immensely powerful Phoenix Force – an entity considered one of the most powerful in the universe. Joining the team in the 1990s, he immediately demonstrated his abilities, notably by teleporting an entire population to a new planet. The Phoenix Force granted him powers like telepathy, moving objects with his mind, and controlling energy and matter. He also played a crucial role in the Guardians’ victory against the Ubiquitor, who tried to reshape reality to her liking.
