The 1980s were a fantastic decade for science fiction films. It was a golden age that gave us classics like Blade Runner, Back to the Future, Aliens, and The Terminator, among many others. This era also brought innovative visual effects that continue to influence filmmaking today. Movies like Flight of the Navigator expanded the boundaries of what sci-fi could achieve, and audiences loved it.
David Lynch’s 1984 film Dune wasn’t a hit when it first came out. Though it was a bold attempt to bring Frank Herbert’s complex novel to the screen, critics didn’t like it, and few people went to see it – it was even named one of the worst films of the year. Despite its initial failure, and even with the success of the newer Dune movies by Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part One, Dune: Part Two, and the planned Dune: Part Three), the original deserves a second look. And you don’t have much time – it’s leaving Netflix on May 1st.
David Lynch’s Dune Is a Misunderstood Classic (With a Surprising Change to Its Ending)

David Lynch’s Dune wasn’t well-received when it first came out, but looking back, it’s not as bad as people thought. Adapting Frank Herbert’s complex novel into a single movie was a huge challenge to begin with, and Lynch’s film has a unique, dreamlike feel. This is partly due to the editing, which was complicated by the fact that Lynch didn’t have complete control over the final version. Despite this, the film still features some bold and creative choices. Ultimately, it’s a truly original work, and stands in stark contrast to the more recent adaptation by Denis Villeneuve.
A notable part of David Lynch’s Dune is how it ends. The film significantly changed the book’s ending, giving it a more hopeful and definitive conclusion. It showed Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) fulfilling the Fremen prophecy and bringing rain to Arrakis, establishing him as the Kwisatz Haderach. This was a smart move, as a sequel wasn’t certain, and unfortunately, the film’s box office performance ultimately prevented one. It took almost 40 years for a more faithful adaptation to appear. However, before the next installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga arrives, it’s worth revisiting Lynch’s version—but do so before May 1st.
