Paramount+ has become known for its quality original shows, including hits like Landman, Criminal Minds: Evolution, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Now, one of their best series—a spinoff of a long-running franchise that critics loved (earning a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes)—is back with a new season. However, there’s some bad news for viewers.
Season 2 of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all 12 episodes, became available on Paramount+ on December 12th. The show, a continuation of the 2023 film Mutant Mayhem, follows Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo as they balance being teenage heroes with the challenges of high school in New York City. Sadly, this season is the last for the series, making it one of the shortest animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shows ever created.
Why Is Paramount+’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Series Ending After 2 Seasons?
When Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiered on Paramount+ in 2024, it quickly became a popular and critically praised series. The first season earned a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics like Sayantan Gayen from CBR called it the most faithful adaptation of the comic books yet, while Michael Thomas of Collider praised it as a great continuation of the story that allows each of the four turtles to develop as individuals. Reviewers particularly enjoyed the animation style, which felt both nostalgic and fresh, the way the show built upon the existing story, and its focus on the personalities of each Turtle.
The animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a genuinely enjoyable show for both dedicated fans and new viewers, making its cancellation after only two seasons quite surprising. While Paramount hasn’t given a clear reason, it seems the show successfully did what it was intended to do: connect the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie with its planned sequel. More broadly, the cancellation likely resulted from the merger between Skydance Media and Paramount Global, which reorganized Paramount’s TV channels – including Nickelodeon and Nickelodeon Animation Studios – under the leadership of George Cheeks.
What’s Next for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise?
It’s disappointing to see Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles end so quickly, but fans have a lot to look forward to! Besides Mutant Mayhem 2, scheduled to release on September 17, 2027, several other TMNT movies are in development. Paramount is working on a new live-action movie – the first since 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The Hollywood Reporter also announced The Last Ronin, a project combining live-action and computer animation, back in April 2024, though it’s currently on hold.
