After almost thirty years, a sequel to the critically acclaimed sci-fi horror film Event Horizon is finally in the works. IDW Publishing has been having a successful year with horror comics, including new versions of The Twilight Zone and a follow-up to Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. As part of this push into horror, IDW also released a prequel to Paul Anderson’s Event Horizon, titled Event Horizon: Dark Descent, which details the terrifying experiences of the original crew.
IDW Publishing announced exciting updates regarding its Event Horizon prequel this week. All four issues of Dark Descent have already sold out. Though the prequel is nearing its conclusion, fans won’t have to wait long to revisit this universe, as IDW is quickly moving forward with a sequel to the original movie. Event Horizon: Inferno is scheduled for release in April 2026, featuring writing by Dark Descent’s Christian Ward and artwork by Rob Carey. While specific details are still limited, the story will take place 200 years after the first film and promises even “more cosmic terror.”
IDW to Reveal What Happened Next After Event Horizon

If you haven’t seen Event Horizon, you’re in for a treat – it’s a truly original horror and science fiction film. The story takes place in the near future and centers on a rescue team sent to investigate the sudden return of the Event Horizon, a spaceship equipped with a groundbreaking gravity drive that allows it to travel vast distances by warping space. What the crew doesn’t realize is that during its years-long disappearance, the Event Horizon ventured into a terrifying dimension that can only be compared to Hell.
For a long time, the fate of the crew from the film Event Horizon was largely left up to viewers’ speculation. That changed with the release of IDW’s Dark Descent comic. The comic book tells the story of the crew as they initially power up the ship’s gravity drive, unknowingly opening a gateway to terrifying cosmic horrors. It’s a chilling and gradually unfolding tale where each crew member’s past mistakes come back to haunt them, leaving them vulnerable to Paimon, the ruler of this nightmarish dimension. While deeply disturbing, the story has resonated strongly with fans.
Even with the new story details added by Event Horizon: Dark Descent, many questions remain about what happened after the movie’s ending. We don’t know if others experimented with the gravity drive, what became of the rescue team, or even if the final scenes were actually real. However, the creators have a great opportunity to build on the movie’s story, and they’ve already shown they’re planning to add even more terrifying elements.
What Else is Lurking in Event Horizon’s Universe?

There isn’t much detail available about this news, only the basic idea. The cover art shows a winged figure coming out of the ship’s engine, but considering the series’ dark themes, it’s unlikely this figure is an angel. We’re left wondering if this character will be an ally or an enemy to Paimon, and whether they’re as malicious as the king of Hell – or even more so. The creator, Ward, has hinted at more cosmic horror in this series, so this new character is definitely one to watch.
I have a lot of faith in Ward after his great work on Dark Descent, but I’m a little hesitant about the new story taking place so far in the future. The prequel and original film felt strongly connected because they were set close together in time. Choosing to set the sequel 200 years later is definitely a different approach. However, that time jump might be crucial to the story the team is building, so it’s probably best to wait and see how it all unfolds.
This is fantastic news! The Event Horizon: Dark Descent comic is one of the best I’ve ever read based on a film. It’s a compelling story by itself, and it cleverly expands the movie’s universe, making it even more frightening. I’m really excited to see what creators Ward and Carey come up with next. I’m hoping they’ll deliver a sequel that maintains the same level of intelligent, terrifying cosmic horror as the first two installments.
