James Gunn’s movie titled Superman has finally hit the big screen, marking a new era of ambition in DC film adaptations. This film presents viewers with a brand new Man of Steel (David Corenswet) and a world teeming with various heroes, paving the way for the epic storyline of the DC Universe conceived by James Gunn and Peter Safran. One of the notable inclusions is Michael Holt, the intelligent hero famously known as Mister Terrific, brilliantly portrayed by Edi Gathegi in Superman. In a world where Superman frequently faces challenges that demand more than just brute strength, the role of an intellectual powerhouse becomes vital. In this new film, James Gunn solidifies Mister Terrific’s status as such a figure, underscoring his significance through a dramatic moment where he confidently delivers a line that mirrors the essence of Batman’s iconic catchphrase.
In my perspective as an ardent fan, Superman unveils a chilling truth: Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) has ingeniously constructed a miniature universe, serving as his private jail, hidden through portals scattered worldwide. This secret realm isn’t merely a place to detain foes, but also a bargaining chip for political favors. Luthor’s allies can use it to eliminate unwanted individuals discreetly. However, the technology is precarious; any malfunction could trigger disastrous events, such as the emergence of ominous black holes. What’s more alarming is that these interdimensional portals might merge our world with another if left open for extended periods. The threat escalates dramatically in Superman’s third act when Luthor seemingly neglects to close a portal, provoking a showdown. Consequently, a colossal rift appears, relentlessly widening towards Metropolis and threatening to cleave the city in two. With Metropolis teetering on the edge of annihilation, Superman joins forces with Krypto and Mister Terrific to take down Luthor.
The sole method for locking the rift in another dimension is a secret code that only Luthor possesses, leading our heroes to LuthorCorp’s headquarters. They encounter fierce opposition from Ultraman, The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), and hordes of Luthor’s henchmen armed with armor resistant to superpowers. Following a tough fight, the team eventually breaks through to the control room. As Superman confronts Luthor, Mr. Terrific dashes towards the main console to enter the code and close the portal. A nervous LuthorCorp worker hesitates and queries if he’s positive he can accomplish it. Without hesitation, Mr. Terrific pushes aside the LuthorCorp technician, assertively taking control of the console, proclaiming, “I don’t require any assistance! I’m Mr. Terrific!
Mister Terrific Steps Into Batman’s Shoes for Superman
Mister Terrific’s strong statement mirrors one of the most iconic lines in cinema history, “I am Batman.” The influence of this line can be traced back to Tim Burton’s 1989 hit movie, Batman. In a pivotal moment, Batman, a mysterious figure, confronted a frightened criminal on a rooftop. When the criminal asked, “Who are you?”, Michael Keaton as Batman picked him up and said with chilling certainty, “I am Batman.
The phrase “I am Batman” solidified as the iconic expression of the character in the groundbreaking “Batman: The Animated Series,” especially in the episode “Nothing to Fear.” In this episode, a hallucination brought on by a toxin made Bruce Wayne’s father appear and call him a disgrace. Batman defied the vision, shouting, “I am not a disgrace! I am vengeance! I am the night! I AM BATMAN!” This proclamation, ending with his chosen identity, has since served as the benchmark for demonstrating Batman’s unwavering resolve. From Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” to the latest film “The Flash,” this line has been repeatedly employed to convey Batman’s self-assured hero persona, embodying a character who knows precisely what his mission is.
In 2005, the comic “All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder,” penned by Frank Miller (known for “The Dark Knight Returns”), gained notoriety. In this reinterpretation by Miller, the character of Batman, portrayed as aggressive and using harsh language, scolded the young Dick Grayson/Robin for failing to recognize him, exclaiming, “What on earth do you take me for? I’m none other than the Batman!
In a skillful nod to the deep history of DC Comics, Superman deftly sets the stage for the characterization of the new DCU Mister Terrific within the film. This quote aptly concludes the role Terrific assumes throughout the storyline. Whilst Superman offers the divine strength required to confront super-powered adversaries, Mister Terrific brings his intelligence to outwit a villain as crafty as Lex Luthor and manage the advanced technology that LuthorCorp developed.
Without the outstanding performance of Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt, none of this would be as impactful. His portrayal exudes a grumbly intensity that convincingly showcases his high intellect. This line underscores the undeniable self-assurance borne from knowing he’s the best in any given situation. As such, Mister Terrific effectively solidifies his significance within the DC Universe, despite being less well-known as a comic book character.
