Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was the big winner at The Game Awards 2025, taking home nine awards, including the coveted Game of the Year title.
With the game gaining so much attention lately, I expect a lot of new players will be discovering this amazing story for the first time, and I’m really excited for them to experience it.
I quickly became completely hooked on Expedition 33 when it came out in April, finishing it in just a few weeks. It’s truly a masterpiece – Sandfall Interactive and Kepler Interactive have created a turn-based RPG with a moving story, exciting battles, a beautiful but melancholic art style, and a wonderfully haunting soundtrack.
I’m probably like a lot of you – I got totally hooked on the main themes, “Une vie à t’aimer” and “Alicia,” while playing the game. I found myself replaying them on Spotify over and over! They’re sung in French, and honestly, the melodies just hit me in the feels. They’re really beautiful and evoke this bittersweet longing that I didn’t even know I needed.
I actually hadn’t bothered to find out what these songs meant until just now, and I’m happy I waited until after I finished the game to do so.
Interestingly, the songs “Une vie à t’aimer” and “Alicia” tell the story of the central conflict and plot points of Expedition 33.
I suggest avoiding looking up translations—or not paying too much attention to them if you know French—until after you finish the game, unless you don’t mind spoilers.
If you’ve already finished the game, I suggest checking out a translation – the one on Genius is a good place to start.
That all said, listen to these beautiful songs again
Expedition 33 has a really intricate story – it’s more complicated than most video game plots. Because of this, the meaning of the songs might not be clear until you’ve progressed further in the game.
However, the emotions expressed in the songs could spoil parts of the story for you, and I prefer to start games without knowing what’s going to happen.
I don’t want to give away any surprises, but the ending of Expedition 33 really took me by surprise. My husband and I have been talking about it a lot, and I’m trying to avoid revealing too much so I don’t ruin it for anyone else.
Even if you don’t understand French, or don’t focus on the lyrics, I really suggest revisiting these songs. They’re so lovely that they deserve to be enjoyed beyond just playing the game Expedition 33, which is great in its own right.
If you haven’t tried this year’s Game of the Year, I definitely suggest you do! I’ve been having a lot of fun with it on both my gaming PC and my Xbox Ally X, and I know I’ll be playing it again and again for years to come.
Wow, the new content revealed at The Game Awards has me wanting to start playing again!
