Netflix has been adding a lot of new content this month, including shows like The Abandons and Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches, films like The Northman, the Kung Fu Panda movies, and various holiday titles. But a surprising psychological thriller recently appeared on the platform with no prior announcement, and it stars John Travolta in a role you might not recognize.
The movie, called The Fanatic, features John Travolta as Moose, a deeply obsessed movie fan. The trailer shows Moose trying unsuccessfully to get an autograph from his favorite actor, Hunter (Devon Sawa). What begins as seemingly harmless enthusiasm quickly escalates into a dangerous obsession after Moose discovers where Hunter lives.
The Fanatic Was 15 Years In The Making
Besides John Travolta, the movie also has a surprising director: Fred Durst, the frontman of Limp Bizkit. The idea for this film actually started 15 years ago when they met at a party, and they were finally able to team up and bring it to life.
I remember a party for ‘Ladder 49’ ages ago, and Joaquin Phoenix was there. Fred Durst was good friends with Joaquin, Balthazar Getty, and a bunch of the guys from the movie, so we were all hanging out together. Fred was really excited to meet me, and he told me that filmmaking was actually his biggest passion – that the music he’d made was just a way to fund his real dream, and he hoped to share something he’d directed with me someday. He was surprisingly passionate about it!
Travolta initially agreed to the project about fifteen years ago. Then, two years ago, he received the script and immediately loved it. He recognized it would be a challenge to fund, given its unusual nature, but he managed to secure financing with the help of a friend who successfully raised the necessary funds. Both he and the director, Fred, considered it a truly special and meaningful project.
Playing Moose was a really impactful and enjoyable role for Travolta.
I’m incredibly proud of this film and my performance in it. It’s one of the most enjoyable roles I’ve ever played. It was a unique experience – usually, actors feel the need to stay in character constantly, but I really wanted to be this character all the time. Even between scenes, I stayed in character to keep everyone, including the director, Fred, entertained. We’d often improvise, building up to the scripted lines. Playing Moose was a real pleasure, and I felt like I understood him completely, in many ways.
