Throughout his career, this actor has starred in many successful movies, collectively earning $2.77 billion at the box office. Only one of these films, Aladdin, surpassed $1 billion in earnings.
The 2019 fantasy film was a big change of pace for director Guy Ritchie, known for his darker, more realistic movies. It was a live-action remake of the popular 1992 animated film and became a huge hit itself. However, six years later, Zootopia 2, released in 2025, has become an even bigger success, earning more money worldwide than the 2019 film, according to The Numbers.
Until recently, Aladdin was among Disney’s most successful films, earning $1.042 billion worldwide on a $182 million budget. However, Zootopia 2 has now taken the top spot for 2025, grossing $1.13 billion. It also passed the live-action Lilo & Stitch, which previously held the position just behind Aladdin with $1.038 billion.
Disney’s Zootopia 2 is becoming a massive hit! Just 17 days after hitting theaters, it’s become the fastest PG-rated movie to reach this level of success. It’s already Disney’s seventh highest-grossing animated film, exceeding the box office numbers of both the original Zootopia (from 2016) and last year’s Moana 2.
With movie fans loving Zootopia 2, the film is expected to earn over $1 billion internationally. It has already made $877 million overseas and continues to perform well. If it reaches this goal, it would be only the second animated movie to do so, following Inside Out 2 from last year.
Aladdin Divided the Critics & Audiences
Despite earning over $1 billion worldwide, the movie Aladdin didn’t receive overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. While audiences loved it – giving it a 94% approval rating and a ‘Verified Hot’ badge on Rotten Tomatoes – critics were more divided, resulting in a 57% approval score and a ‘rotten’ badge.
Reviewers felt the live-action remake didn’t live up to the magic of the animated classic. While they acknowledged the impressive visual effects and spectacle, it lacked the emotional depth of the original. Plans for a sequel were discussed, but ultimately never materialized. Director Guy Ritchie is now working on another live-action Disney film.
Mena Massoud played Aladdin in the movie, and Will Smith starred as the Genie. Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen also appeared in the film.
Aladdin is streaming on Disney+.
