As a long-time MCU fan, I was thrilled when Marvel brought back a truly memorable villain in Season 1 of Hawkeye, which started streaming on Disney+ November 24th, 2021. While it was great to finally see Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) get his own focused story – especially after becoming an Avenger back in 2012 – and to meet the fantastic Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), the return of this iconic bad guy was a real highlight. It just made the whole season even more exciting!
The fifth episode of Hawkeye, titled “Ronin” and released on Disney+ on December 15, 2021, marked the return of Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. D’Onofrio last appeared as Kingpin in season 3 of Daredevil, which was part of the now-concluded Netflix Defenders Saga. With the cancellation of the Defenders Saga franchise, his future role was uncertain. However, Charlie Cox’s return as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home created opportunities for other characters from that series to reappear. This ultimately led to the full integration of the Defenders Saga into the official MCU timeline, establishing Kingpin as an important character for future Marvel stories.
How Kingpin Has Changed Since His Return in Hawkeye

Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock were frequent rivals in the Netflix series Daredevil, giving viewers a good understanding of Fisk as a villain. However, the series Hawkeye added a significant new layer to his backstory. We learned that Fisk had a long-standing relationship with the Lopez family, initially employing William Lopez as part of his criminal organization, the Tracksuit Mafia. He then became a father figure to Maya Lopez, helping to raise her and eventually grooming her to take over his empire after her father was killed by the Ronin.
In the series Echo, Kingpin appeared as a major character, shown recovering from the shooting Maya inflicted on him in Hawkeye. Ultimately, Maya decided to break ties with Wilson Fisk, leading him to seek power through a mayoral run in New York City. This conflict escalated in the Daredevil: Born Again series, which brought Daredevil back to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fisk created a false sense of danger from vigilantes, giving him a reason to ban heroes, form a task force against them, and impose martial law on the city.
Kingpin, played by Wilson Fisk, is set to be a major force in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. He’s come a long way since his reappearance in Hawkeye (2021), where he was rebuilding his criminal organization after significant losses. Now, he’s back in power and will be a serious challenge not only to Daredevil, but to other heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans are excited to see how his role expands in future MCU stories.
