Stephen King fans have had a fantastic year with several successful adaptations of his work. In theaters, movies like The Running Man, The Long Walk, and The Life of Chuck were all hits. On television, HBO Max’s It: Welcome to Derry—a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 It films—has also been a critical and fan favorite. While Welcome to Derry‘s first season recently concluded on December 14th, fans won’t have to wait long for more King content, as another adaptation is coming soon to Netflix.
The series Castle Rock will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 16th. Originally airing on Hulu for two seasons back in 2018, the show was unfortunately cancelled, disappointing many Stephen King fans. Castle Rock is considered a standout adaptation of King’s work – both a great show and uniquely different from others. Many feel it was underrated, and now it’s getting a second chance to be discovered just in time for the holidays.
Castle Rock Isn’t Just One King Adaptation (And That’s What Makes It Special)

Unlike most Stephen King adaptations, Castle Rock isn’t based on a single book. Instead, the series draws on the overall history and atmosphere of the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine, and the characters within King’s universe. Each of the two seasons features a new story and follows different characters, building on familiar elements from King’s work. The first season stars Andrew Holland and Bill Skarsgard, and centers on Henry Deaver, a lawyer who returns to Castle Rock to defend a strange young man discovered locked in a cage at Shawshank Prison—known only as ‘The Kid’.
Season 2 of Castle Rock is a prequel to Misery, telling the story of a young Annie Wilkes (Lizzy Caplan) and her daughter, Joy (Elsie Fisher). After a car accident, they find themselves stuck in Castle Rock. While not yet the terrifying figure from Misery, young Annie is clearly troubled, creating a suspenseful and fascinating story. The show successfully blends horror and drama, making it one of the best adaptations of Stephen King’s work. It includes plenty of references to King’s universe for dedicated fans, and it’s a great follow-up to Welcome to Derry.
Castle Rock lands on Netflix on December 16.
