Gwyneth Paltrow & Jennifer Lopez “Want to Die” Over Online Criticism

Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez are getting loud about their critics.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez connected during a chat with Emily Blunt, Tessa Thompson, Elle Fanning, and Sydney Sweeney, discussing how they both handle negativity online.

Gwyneth Paltrow said in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times that she makes a point of avoiding reading anything written about her, ever. She was emphatic about this, stating simply, ‘Period.’

Jennifer shared her surprise, asking, “Wait, not anything about yourself? Ever? Period?”

Jennifer, 56, says she avoids reading reviews of her movies, but people still share them with her, whether positive or negative.

Gwyneth, who is 53, mentioned occasionally experiencing a strong desire for escape. The actress from Kiss of the Spider Woman replied with stark honesty, saying, “And you want to die.”

The actor, known for Marty Supreme, related to that feeling, explaining that seeing something awful about yourself shared online – and then dismissed by the person who sent it – is incredibly upsetting. He admitted he tries to steer clear of such things and even deleted his Instagram account as a result.

Likewise, J.Lo often feels the need to “cleanse every once in a while.”

She’s found that focusing on her work, and not letting personal criticism bother her, has been a successful strategy.

Jennifer shared that she’s always attracted both positive and negative attention, for reasons she doesn’t fully understand. It’s frustrating, she said, because it feels like people misjudge her – sometimes they seem to ‘get’ her, and then quickly they don’t again.

Even though things are tough, the Grammy nominee focuses on the positive, reminding herself that she made good choices, worked hard, and treated others with kindness. She says this has always been a source of strength for her.

You know, I’ve noticed a really interesting parallel between these two individuals. They both faced a lot of public scrutiny when they decided to try something new and step outside of what people expected from them. It’s tough when you’re used to one path and then decide to forge your own – there’s always going to be some pushback, and they definitely experienced that firsthand.

Gwyneth remembers that when she started her own business around 2008, it initially caused a lot of confusion and frustration for people. She says many didn’t understand her decision, and she’s dealt with criticism and misunderstanding ever since launching the first Goop newsletter 17 years ago.

J.Lo felt the same about pursuing a music career after successful films like Selena and Out of Sight.

She remembered it being a huge moment. People had told her she’d never be taken seriously as an actor again.

As Gwyneth Paltrow—who previously dated Jennifer Lopez’s ex-husband, Ben Affleck—mentioned, “You were number one in both movies and music at the same time, weren’t you?”

In February 2001, Jennifer Lopez achieved a rare feat: her album, J.Lo, hit number one on the music charts, and her movie, The Wedding Planner, was the top film in theaters. She even earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for this accomplishment.

She explained that people are always trying to limit what you can achieve, telling you what you can’t do. She herself has proven that wrong, launching a perfume line, clothing lines, and now J Lo Beauty. Her advice is simple: just follow what feels right for you.
