Nick Reiner Murder Charges Carry Possible Life Sentence, Death Penalty

Nick Reiner could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Two days after Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found murdered at their home, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced charges against their 32-year-old son. He could face either life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.

The district attorney announced the suspect will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and that the crime involved multiple victims. He also stated that the suspect is accused of using a knife as a deadly weapon.

The charges could result in a life sentence with no chance of release, or potentially the death penalty, explained Hochman. However, no decision has been made yet regarding seeking the death penalty.

In California, a conviction for first-degree murder always results in a minimum prison sentence of 25 years, as outlined in Penal Code section 187.

Hochman announced that his office would officially file first-degree murder charges later that day, but he emphasized that simply filing charges doesn’t mean proof of guilt.

He explained they will present evidence in court that meets the high standard required in all criminal cases – proof beyond a reasonable doubt. This means convincing all 12 jurors, unanimously, that the evidence supports the charges.

The District Attorney didn’t share specific details about the evidence collected, but praised the Los Angeles Police Department’s robbery-homicide division for their diligent work. He stated their efforts were key to building the case and filing the charges announced today.

Hochman said Nick’s next steps are to complete a routine medical check, which is standard procedure after an arrest by the LAPD, and then go to court.

As soon as doctors say he’s fit to appear in court, he’ll be formally charged and asked how he pleads – whether he’s guilty or not guilty, according to Hochman.

Nick was arrested around 9 p.m. on December 14th, after police discovered his parents’ bodies at their home in Los Angeles earlier that day.

Attorney Alan Jackson, known for previously representing Harvey Weinstein and Karen Read, has announced he will be representing Nick in this case.

Long before Rob and Michele Singer Reiner sadly passed away, their son, Nick Reiner, had spoken about his own struggles with addiction. He even worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which focused on the topic of substance abuse.

Nick explained that he had been to rehab 17 times before turning 30.

In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he recounted his experiences with homelessness, stating he had lived on the streets in Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described those times as difficult and unpleasant, saying he spent nights and even weeks without a home.

Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs.

Oh my god, you won’t BELIEVE this story he told on the Dopey podcast back in 2018! He said he basically went crazy in his guest house, like, ten rounds of pure madness! He’d taken a ton of uppers – he thinks it was coke and something else – and was up for days. Can you imagine? He started just…punching things! Just losing it in his guest house. It’s terrifying and amazing all at once, honestly. I’ve listened to it like a million times!

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13th, director Rob Reiner and his 32-year-old son, Nick, had a significant argument. Friends of the family later confirmed the fight to the L.A. Times, adding that guests observed Nick behaving oddly during the holiday celebration.

According to two people familiar with the event, Nick was causing disturbances at the party by interrupting people’s conversations.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department was called to a home in Brentwood, California, to investigate a death, following a report received the day after a Christmas party.

According to a statement from the LAPD, officers found two people inside the home, later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.

The Robbery Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section began investigating how the deaths occurred.

According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy Reiner.

Rob and Michele Reiner did not die from illness or old age; they appeared to have been stabbed, according to a source with knowledge of the situation who spoke with NBC News.

According to the LAPD, the initial investigation revealed that the Reiners were murdered.

Police determined that Rob and Michele’s son, Nick, caused their deaths. He wasn’t arrested until several hours after their bodies were discovered.

Police announced that Nick Reiner was arrested around 9:15 p.m. on December 15th. He has been charged with murder and is currently being held in jail without the possibility of bail.

TopMob News was not able to find a lawyer on file to speak on Nick Reiner’s behalf.

After Rob’s death, Tracy said she’d seen her father the day before his passing.

She told NBC News that she came from a wonderful family and was completely stunned, saying, ‘I don’t know what to say.’

Jane Fonda saw Rob and Michele the night before their tragic deaths.

The actress posted on Instagram on December 15th that she had seen them two nights prior, and they seemed happy and well. She added that she is now devastated and shocked by the news.

On the December 15th episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Michelle Obama shared that she and Barack Obama had plans to meet with Rob and Michele on the day they tragically passed away.

On December 16th, TopMob News confirmed that attorney Alan Jackson—known for previously defending Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Karen Read—has been hired to represent Nick, who was arrested two days prior in connection with his parents’ murder.

On December 16th, as authorities prepared to publicly charge Nick at a Los Angeles courthouse, his lawyer informed the press that he hadn’t been given medical approval to appear in court.

According to reports, officials stated that all inmates require a medical evaluation before being taken to court. They are optimistic that the individual in question will be cleared for transport tomorrow.

On December 16th, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that his office will charge Nick with two counts of first-degree murder, and will also pursue a special circumstance allegation due to multiple deaths.

The District Attorney also stated that Nick will be charged with an additional allegation: that he used a knife – a dangerous weapon – during the attack on his parents.

He explained that if convicted, the maximum punishment could be life in prison with no chance of release, or even the death penalty.
