The research team at the beginning of the story is shown under immense stress, and ultimately, the last two members commit suicide. It’s this alien parasite that gets inside people, turning them aggressive and, well, against each other. The infection quickly spreads, making the biggest danger come from within the team itself. It’s incredibly unsettling, and the last surviving member leaves this haunting video message right before he’s overcome – it’s just… “We are not who we are.” It really gets under your skin!

Mulder and Scully Must Trust Each Other

The team is called in to investigate a strange occurrence in the Arctic. Before flying to the research facility, they meet the other experts who will be joining the investigation. This team, led by the initially doubtful Dr. Hodge, immediately experiences tension, with Hodge and Mulder disagreeing even before the full scope of the mystery is revealed.

The newest member of the group is Bear, a pilot played by Jeff Kober, an actor many will recognize from The Walking Dead. He pointedly refuses to show Dr. Hodge any identification, hinting at his involvement in the coming crisis and immediately raising suspicions within the research facility.

“Ice” immediately establishes a disturbing situation. When Mulder and Bear arrive at the research station, they find it filled with corpses. Shortly after, they’re attacked by a dog exhibiting the same aggressive behavior as the deceased researchers. Mulder escapes unharmed, but Bear is injured.

The dog carries a parasite that it transmits to Bear through a bite. Bear keeps his illness a secret from his team. As Mulder, Scully, and the other doctors investigate, they realize anyone infected can’t leave the facility, as it would put the public at risk. Bear tries to escape on a plane but is stopped by Mulder and Hodge.

The team witnesses a parasite moving under one of their member’s skin and rushes to remove it, but unfortunately, he dies during the attempt. Now, they’re stranded in the Arctic without a pilot, and a blizzard is coming. This is when things take a dark turn, as they realize at least one of them is infected and the blame game starts.

Beyond the dangerous blizzard outside, a broken heating system makes things even worse inside. The facility becomes stiflingly hot, adding to the team’s stress and paranoia. Trapped by the storm and sweltering inside, everyone is on edge and increasingly uncomfortable.

Hodge quickly becomes suspicious that Mulder and Scully have been infected by the parasite after hearing them argue. He believes their increased hostility is a key symptom. While the team examines each other, no one else appears to be infected, but the situation triggers a strong disagreement between Mulder and Scully that ultimately strengthens their bond.

After Dr. Denny Murphy’s death, Hodge repeatedly claims Mulder has been infected, and Scully starts to suspect it too. The tension escalates, leading to a standoff where both agents point guns at each other, with everyone quick to blame someone else. Both Mulder and Scully are forced to consider the possibility that the other might be infected. Mulder’s subtle decision to lower his gun first is a significant moment, demonstrating a deeper connection than just professional respect.

“Ice” Is a Turning Point for Mulder and Scully in The X-Files

Mulder lets Scully lock him in a storage closet, separating him from the rest of the team. He trusts her completely and is willing to ease the tense situation, even though he knows he isn’t infected and understands Scully needs to be certain.

Hodge and Dr. Silva discuss something outside a storage room, but Scully doubts Hodge is actually sick. To prove he’s not infected, she agrees to examine him alone inside the room, even though it could be risky. This shows Scully is willing to put herself in danger to support her partner.

Hiding in the closet, Mulder tells Scully he trusts her, but not their other colleagues. He lets her examine him, and she finds no evidence of the parasite. He then checks Scully, confirming she’s also uninfected. This leads them to believe one of the other two team members must be carrying it.

The person responsible turns out to be Dr. Silva, who infects Scully with a second parasite. This causes the two parasites inside her to fight and ultimately destroy each other. Afterward, the government burns down the research facility to eliminate all traces of the experiments.
