Even though we’re only halfway through the 2020s, DC Comics is already having a remarkably successful period, creating some of its best stories in decades. Over the last five years, DC has not only delivered strong storylines but also introduced hundreds of new characters, with some quickly becoming popular heroes. These new characters are diverse, possess compelling powers and personal journeys, and offer better representation for groups often missed in comics. They’ve already played crucial roles in major events that threaten the entire DC Universe, whether as continuations of existing heroes or completely original creations. Either way, these characters define a new era for DC Comics.

DC Comics has introduced many exciting and strong new heroes since the beginning of the 2020s, giving readers compelling stories to follow.

7) Gossamer

Jay Nakamura, who goes by the hero name Gossamer, became well-known in 2021 when he started a relationship with Jon Kent. Originally from the island nation of Gamorra, Jay was subjected to human experiments that gave him the power to become invisible and intangible. He uses these abilities as the hero Gossamer, fighting for justice as a dedicated journalist and leader of The Truth, an activist group exposing global corruption. Driven by a desire to avenge the wrongs done to his homeland and punish corrupt officials, Jay has started making increasingly difficult moral choices, sometimes resorting to unnecessary violence. Despite this, he remains a captivating character and a key part of Superman’s world.

6) Dreamer

Nia Nal, also known as Dreamer, first appeared on the popular CW show Supergirl. She became so well-liked that she officially joined the main DC Universe in 2022. Dreamer is half-human and half-Naltorian, an alien race with powers linked to the Dream World. This connection gives her abilities like seeing the future, projecting energy, and traveling through people’s dreams to reach their location. She’s quickly become important in DC Comics, having foreseen the events of Dark Crisis and reluctantly helping Amanda Waller in Absolute Power. While Dreamer ultimately opposed Waller, she still feels responsible for her actions and is working to make amends.

5) Starchild

Otho-Ra, also known as Starchild, is an alien from a race called the Phaelosians. They’re related to Kryptonians and were once gladiators forced to fight for the cruel Mongul. After Superman saved Otho-Ra and her twin brother, Osul-Ra (also known as Red Son), they were adopted by Martha and Jonathan Kent. Otho-Ra is the more assertive of the two siblings and has always been protective of her brother. She’s currently learning to trust and connect with her new family, which is a challenging but rewarding experience. Like Kryptonians, Otho-Ra has incredible powers such as super strength, flight, and heat vision, but she can also create energy weapons. Otho-Ra and her brother are valuable members of the Superman family and have opened up exciting new possibilities for stories.

4) Ghost-Maker

Minhkkhoa Khan, known as Ghost-Maker, is a relatively new but incredibly skilled member of the Bat-Family, first appearing in 2020. He and Bruce Wayne trained together for years, forming both a strong friendship and a competitive rivalry. Unlike Batman, who fights crime to avenge his parents, Ghost-Maker is driven by the challenge and artistry of crimefighting itself. Once a dangerous, lethal vigilante and even an opponent of Batman, Ghost-Maker now works alongside him, taking on major threats like Scarecrow. He’s since abandoned killing criminals and has even become the leader of Batman Incorporated, an international team of heroes. A fearless and skilled swordsman, Ghost-Maker is a formidable anti-hero who instills fear in Gotham’s criminals.

3) Trinity

Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor welcomed their daughter, Lizzie Prince, into the world in 2024. Created through a magical clay figure infused with both of their essences after Steve’s tragic death at the hands of the villain Sovereign, Lizzie is a special child. Though still a baby, DC Comics has hinted at her incredible destiny since 2023. Known as Trinity, she’s destined to become a powerful and inspiring leader – even the leader of the Justice League! She’s a determined and playful character, and close friends with Jon Kent and Damian Wayne. Trained as an Amazon and wielding three mystical lassos, Trinity has a promising future and is quickly becoming a beloved character.

2) Wonder Girl (Yara Flor)

Yara Flor first appeared in 2020 as a future version of Wonder Woman in the ‘Future State’ comics. She officially joined the main DC universe in 2021 as the fourth Wonder Girl. Born in Brazil to an Amazonian mother and a river god father, Yara learned about her heritage and trained to fight, eventually battling several Olympian Gods who tried to manipulate her. She formed a strong friendship with Wonder Woman and became a powerful warrior among the Amazons of Themyscira. Since her introduction, Yara has quickly become a fan favorite and has been central to important storylines like Dark Crisis and Trail of the Amazons.

1) Green Lantern (Sojourner Mullein)

Sojourner “Jo” Mullien, debuting in 2020, has quickly become a fan-favorite Green Lantern. As a former police officer, Jo was chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps and sent to a distant, unnamed space sector. In this remote area, known as the “Far Sector,” she used her detective abilities to solve a murder while dealing with social and political challenges. Jo’s Power Ring is special – it’s fueled by her ability to cope with fear, not overcome it. This allows the ring to recharge automatically and showcases her inner strength. With her skills as an investigator, Jo is a strong addition to the Green Lantern Corps and a rising star in the DC Universe.
