Goldberg’s Final WWE Match Was Not What We Expected (Or Was It?)

For nearly two decades, Goldberg has shone brightly as a wrestling superstar, starting in WCW in 1997. With his career drawing to a close, he’s set for one final bout this Saturday at the Main Event. Tonight, Goldberg faced off against his last opponent before leaving WWE, and it was none other than the formidable Ring General Gunther. However, unlike the intense build-up by WWE in recent weeks, the match didn’t quite live up to expectations, though given the circumstances, it might have been more fitting if we had anticipated a different outcome.

Initially, Goldberg overpowered Gunther in their skirmish, pushing him roughly to the ground. In retaliation, Gunther retaliated with a kick to Goldberg’s abdomen, but Goldberg countered by forcing him towards the ropes using a forceful shoulder block. Next, Goldberg endured several aggressive chops from the Champion and responded with laughter. Finally, he delivered a clothesline that left Gunther staggering.

After that, Goldberg delivered heavy blows to Champ’s head, eventually knocking Gunther back onto the mat again. However, Gunther managed to thwart a jackhammer attack and sent Goldberg tumbling down instead. Gunther then targeted Goldberg’s knee brace with a well-aimed kick, but Goldberg sprang back up swiftly and flung Gunther off the top rope. Goldberg readied himself for a spear, but Gunther darted out of the ring to the floor, causing Goldberg some annoyance.

Gunther focused on Goldberg’s injured knee before delivering two sharp blows, and then, as Goldberg attempted a spear, the Champ skillfully dodged, sending Goldberg tumbling over the barricade to the floor. After the break, though visibly fatigued, Goldberg rallied, trading heavy punches and chops with the Champion.

Regrettably, Gunther stumbled upon Goldberg’s injured knee again, causing Goldberg to stumble. However, Gunther’s taunts were merely infuriating Goldberg. In response, Goldberg retaliated with a powerful slam that sent Gunther tumbling, but Goldberg continued to favor his knee after any interaction. Despite this, Goldberg persisted in dealing heavy blows to Gunther, sending him crashing into the corner and then somehow executing an impressive flip that flung Gunther over his head, preventing a powerbomb.

During that moment in the match, things took an unexpected turn when Goldberg attempted a spear, but Gunther cleverly stepped aside, causing the referee, Charles Robinson, to take the brunt of the impact instead. Seizing the opportunity, Gunther swiftly removed Goldberg’s knee brace and used it as a weapon, exacerbating the existing injury on Goldberg’s knee. With a cruel twist, Gunther struck Goldberg over the back of his head with the knee brace, making it appear as though the match was all but over. At this point, Gunther paraded around the ring, taunting the crowd with the knee brace in hand.

After mocking and pushing Gabe, Goldberg’s son, who retaliated by leaping over the barrier to confront Gunther, Gunther stepped back onto the ring apron only to receive a spear from Goldberg as he entered. This invigorated Goldberg, who followed up with a jackhammer move on Gunther. Goldberg attempted a pin after a fresh referee rushed into the ring, but Gunther managed to survive.

Later, Gunther held Goldberg in a sleeper hold, but miraculously, Goldberg broke free and sat up. Regrettably, once more, Gunther applied the sleeper hold, and on this occasion, Goldberg couldn’t escape in time, awarding Gunther the victory. As it stands, Gunther remains your WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Following the match, Gunther exited the ring, and Goldberg addressed the crowd, which included many relatives and friends, expressing gratitude for all their support.

Goldberg expressed his regret for not performing at his best, stating that he was overwhelmed by the presence of more than 100 friends and family who traveled from various parts of the world to attend. He went on to express his deep appreciation to everyone present, praising the fans in Atlanta and saying, “I love you, I couldn’t have done it without you.

Over the last few months, WWE has surprised fans with unexpected Title changes. Some speculated that Goldberg might have one more Title run before his final retirement bout, but with Gunther as his opponent, the chances seemed slimmer. However, there was still an air of uncertainty surrounding it. Unfortunately, things didn’t unfold as expected, but the match turned out to be longer than anticipated and Goldberg delivered a performance better than many of his recent ring comebacks, even managing a Jackhammer after going through a barricade.
