**WARNING: Contains full spoilers for Avatar: Fire and Ash**
James Cameron’s Avatar movies have always been known for their grand scale and impressive visuals. The original film, released in 2009, revolutionized 3D cinema, and the 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, continued this tradition, offering audiences another immersive and captivating experience.
The highly anticipated third film in the Avatar saga is here, and director James Cameron has truly outdone himself. This time, we return to the world of Pandora to find Jake Sully and the Na’vi once again battling their enemies – the ruthless Quaritch and the RDA. But this time, Quaritch and the RDA have gained some formidable new allies, making the conflict even more intense.
The heroes find allies in the Ash People, a Na’vi tribe seeking revenge, led by the strong and impressive Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin.
As you might recall from the last movie, Spider, Quaritch’s son and a friend to the Sully children, rescued his father from drowning. This unusual bond between them is a key element in the new film, creating challenges for both the good guys and the bad.
The RDA discovers Spider can now breathe the air on Pandora without a mask—Kiri helped him achieve this—and they become determined to capture him to try and replicate this ability for their own people.
After a complicated story filled with kidnappings, daring escapes, and shocking discoveries – including the revelation that Kiri is a clone of Grace – the events lead to a large-scale battle. This battle feels quite similar to the one in the first film.

Avatar: Fire and Ash ending explained: What happens at the end of the film?
The movie culminates in a massive battle between Sully’s forces – a united front of Na’vi clans and the Tulkun – and the RDA, along with their allies, the Ash People. The fight is prolonged and fraught with tension, swinging back and forth with heavy losses on both sides.
At first, Jake and Neytiri are hurt, and it’s up to their children to keep them alive. When the situation looks hopeless, Kiri, Spider, and Tuk enter the Spirit World to ask Eywa for assistance. Shortly after, sea creatures arrive to help, gradually shifting the battle in their favor.
As the battle intensifies, several Sky People, including Scoresby and General Ardmore, are killed. Tragically, Ronal also dies from her injuries, shortly after giving birth to a daughter. She entrusts the baby to Neytiri before passing away.
The story builds to a final showdown between Jake and Quaritch, his longtime enemy, in a battle on a floating island. Things get even more complicated when Spider nearly falls to his death, but Quaritch surprisingly rescues him.
Jake immediately follows Quaritch, prioritizing Spider’s safety over saving his opponent. The rest of the Sully family quickly joins the fight, providing backup.
Does Quaritch die in Avatar: Fire and Ash?
Once Spider is rescued, Jake prevents the other Na’vi from killing Quaritch. However, Quaritch unexpectedly leaps into the abyss, appearing to fall to his death.
Although the villain clearly faces a difficult situation, we never actually see him die after falling. This leaves open the possibility that he was saved, but his ultimate fate remains a mystery.
Even if Quaritch dies, it wouldn’t be surprising, since he’s cheated death before. This version of Quaritch is a Na’vi Avatar rebuilt with his original memories and personality after his death in the first movie. So, it’s possible he could survive again – we’ll have to wait and find out.
What happens to Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash?
The other main villain, Varang, played by Oona Chaplin, survives the film.
She played a significant role in the final battle, even managing to briefly defeat Neytiri before Kiri intervened and turned the tables. However, Neytiri and Kiri surprisingly chose to spare her, leaving the possibility open for her return in a potential fourth film.
Ultimately, the question is whether she’ll be able to team up with Quaritch again when the opportunity arises.
What happens in the final scene of Avatar: Fire and Ash?
Now that the fighting is over and the Sully family is safe, the movie concludes with Kiri introducing Spider to the wonders of the Spirit World. There, they have a touching reunion with Neteyam and Grace.
Just as Cameron hinted, the story wraps up nicely – but longtime fans of the series will likely be disappointed if this turns out to be the final adventure on Pandora.
Look, after everything that happened, with Varang and maybe even Quaritch still unaccounted for, and with so many mysteries surrounding Kiri – is she really Grace’s clone? – and Spider’s strange connection to the Spirit World, it’s clear there’s a ton of story left to tell. As a viewer, I’m definitely eager to hear what James Cameron and the team have planned for the next chapter. Hopefully, we won’t be waiting too long for some news!
Avatar: Fire and Ash is now showing in UK cinemas.
