We’re Sad Marvel Is Breaking a Trend in 2025 That Defined the Last 2 Decembers

Marvel Studios has significantly altered its release plans this year, meaning there won’t be any new Marvel movies or shows during the holiday season. While the current ‘Multiverse Saga’ has faced some criticism from fans, several projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Moon Knight, and WandaVision have been well-received. Despite this success, Marvel isn’t building on that momentum with any new releases soon.

Marvel Studios has made it a tradition to release new seasons of its animated series, What If…?, during the holidays for the past two years. The first season came out between August and October 2021, but seasons two and three both premiered episodes on back-to-back days starting December 22nd, even including Christmas Day. This made What If…? a holiday staple for many Marvel fans. However, Marvel Studios isn’t planning any more seasons, which is disappointing because the show could have been a great way to expand the story of the Multiverse Saga.

Why We Still Want What If…? Season 4 & What Stories Could Be Explored

When Marvel announced the Multiverse Saga in 2022, the plan was for it to conclude with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2025. However, due to delays, strikes, and changes in plans, the saga has been extended to December 2027. What If…? season 3 finished in 2024, originally setting up the final movies for 2025, so the show ending now feels logical. Despite this, fans are hoping for more episodes.

With the Multiverse Saga continuing, bringing back more episodes of What If…? would be fantastic. A major complaint about the saga is that it hasn’t fully delved into the potential of the multiverse. While movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Marvels, Deadpool & Wolverine, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps have shown us glimpses of alternate realities, What If…? was ideally suited to really explore those strange and exciting possibilities. We’ve seen some of that exploration, but Marvel could have expanded on it even further with future seasons.

Season 3 of What If…? really took risks, introducing alternate versions of characters like Storm from the X-Men. The season finale hinted at even more unexpected variants – imagine a samurai Ghost Rider, Spider-Man with six arms, or Thanos as Weapon X! We also saw possibilities like Maestro using magic, Jubilee as the Silver Surfer, and a powerful version of Wanda Maximoff. While some of these ideas, like Blade as Moon Knight, haven’t been fully explored, and one variant appeared in the Marvel Zombies series, fans are hoping for a fourth season of What If…? to see even more of these creative character twists, even if it seems unlikely.
