Jordan Peele’s Him Becomes an Instant Streaming Hit on Peacock

Jordan Peele’s latest film quickly rose to prominence on a major streaming service, becoming a hit despite receiving negative reviews and underperforming in theaters when it was first released this summer.

According to Flix Patrol, the new movie Him, starring Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers, is now the most popular film on Peacock in the U.S. It quickly rose to the top spot, just one day after its release, surpassing other popular titles like How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Bad Guys 2.

The film Him, co-written with Skip Bronkie and Zack Akers, features Jacob Withers as Cameron Cade, a promising football player whose career is threatened after a sudden, violent attack. Cade gets a chance to heal and train at the private camp of his hero, Isaiah White (Wayne Brady), but soon discovers a terrifying new reality.

In addition to Wayans and Withers, the film Him features Julia Fox as influencer Elsie White, Tim Heidecker as Cade’s manager Tom, Jim Jefferies as Isaiah’s doctor Marco, and Maurice Greene as the intense trainer Malek. The cast also includes appearances by Guapdad 4000, Heather Lynn Harris, Indira G. Wilson, GiGi Erneta, Don Benjamin, and Tierra Whack, who is also joining the voice cast of Invincible VS.

I remember when Him first came out in cinemas – it just didn’t seem to connect with audiences, and honestly, it struggled at the box office. It only made around $28 million despite costing $27 million to make. As of today, critics haven’t been kind, giving it a ‘rotten’ score of just 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 220 reviews. Even general audiences weren’t overly impressed, giving it a slightly better, but still not great, approval rating of 57%.

How Marlon Wayans Responded to Him’s Critical Shortcomings

After the release of Him and the generally negative reviews it received, the filmmaker stated they respect film critics and the important role they play in the industry. However, they also emphasized that a critic’s opinion isn’t necessarily shared by everyone.

Marlon Wayans explained that some films are groundbreaking but not always immediately appreciated, and that art is open to individual interpretation. He pointed out that many of his films weren’t initially praised by critics but later became beloved classics. He encouraged audiences to form their own opinions and see the movie for themselves. He was promoting his film, currently in theaters, and signed off with ‘Love to all.’

Him is currently available for streaming on Peacock.
