7 Christmas Movies That You Forgot Were Awesome

As Christmas approaches, it’s the perfect time to enjoy some festive movies! There are tons of options available, offering something for everyone looking for heartwarming holiday entertainment. While we all have our beloved classic Christmas films, there are also lesser-known gems that deserve a watch.

We’re not claiming these are the greatest films ever, and honestly, some might not even be considered truly good. But when it comes to holiday movies, sometimes all you need is something fun and entertaining, and that’s what makes them special. Here are seven Christmas movies that fit the bill! This list offers a little bit of everything – romance, animation, and fresh takes on familiar stories. Whether you’re looking to expand your holiday movie traditions or revisit an old favorite, you’ll find something here.

7) Deck The Halls

The 2006 comedy Deck the Halls features Danny DeVito, Matthew Broderick, Kristin Davis, and Kristin Chenowith. It’s about Steve Finch (Broderick), a man who loves Christmas and considers himself an expert, and his new neighbor, Buddy Hall (DeVito), a car salesman. They get into a decorating competition where Buddy tries to make his house incredibly bright – so much so that it could be seen from space!

The movie wasn’t a hit with critics or audiences, and it’s definitely not a masterpiece. However, there’s a certain charm to cheesy holiday rivalry movies, and this one delivers. It’s so bad it’s actually fun, and worth checking out if you’re in the mood for something lighthearted.

6) Let It Snow

As a total movie buff, I have to say Netflix’s Let It Snow (from 2019) is seriously underrated. It feels like everyone’s completely forgotten how good it is, or even that it exists! It’s basically a teen version of Love Actually, following a bunch of high school students navigating life’s ups and downs on Christmas Eve when a huge snowstorm blankets their small town in Illinois.

Okay, I just finished watching this movie and I have to say, the cast is AMAZING! You’ve got Shameik Moore, Kiernan Shipka, Jacob Batalon, Isabela Merced, Odeya Rush, Mitchell Hope – seriously, so many talented people! But beyond the stars, it’s just a really feel-good movie. It’s warm, comforting, and honestly, it’s the perfect thing to watch during the holidays. It just feels so good!

5) Fred Claus

It’s surprising that the 2007 comedy Fred Claus isn’t more well-known, considering its impressive cast – including Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Miranda Richardson, and many others. Although it wasn’t a financial success in theaters and received mixed reviews, audiences generally enjoyed it more than critics did.

The movie centers on Fred, Santa’s frustrated older brother, who gets a second chance when Santa rescues him from jail and brings him to the North Pole after he loses his job. Predictably, Fred’s chaotic behavior eventually pushes Santa to his limit, forcing Fred to rise to the occasion and save Christmas. While it’s a bit predictable, it’s a fun addition to the Santa Claus story, and the idea of Santa having a flawed brother is surprisingly endearing.

4) Scrooged

Many film adaptations of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol exist, and because of this, a particularly clever one often gets missed. Scrooged, released in 1988, is directed by Richard Donner and features Bill Murray as Frank Cross, a heartless TV executive. As he’s putting together a live broadcast of A Christmas Carol, he’s visited by a series of ghosts on Christmas Eve.

The movie was a hit with audiences and did well in theaters, although critics had varying opinions. Over time, it’s become a popular choice as a fresh take on classic Christmas movies, offering a modern spin on a beloved story. The acting is also superb – Bill Murray is especially fun to watch as the delightfully grumpy character, and it’s surprisingly enjoyable!

3) Klaus

The 2019 animated film Klaus is a truly wonderful movie. Featuring a talented voice cast including Jason Schwartzman, J.K. Simmons, and Rashida Jones, it was nominated for an Academy Award – a first for a Netflix animated feature. Klaus offers a fresh take on the Santa Claus story, taking place in the 19th century and following a postman who develops an unlikely friendship with a solitary toymaker named Klaus.

Klaus is a charming and unique movie that reimagines the story of Santa Claus. Beautifully animated in a classic style, it feels both fresh and timeless, making it a wonderful holiday film for everyone to enjoy.

2) The Santa Claus

Released in 1994 and starring Tim Allen, The Santa Clause has become a beloved holiday tradition, though it’s easy to overlook just how good it is. The movie tells the story of Scott Calvin, a divorced marketing executive, who unexpectedly becomes the new Santa Claus after the original Santa falls to his death on Christmas Eve. The cast also includes Judge Reinhold, Wendy Crewson, David Krumholtz, and Peter Boyle. It was a major success in theaters and led to several sequels.

The Santa Clause is a classic, heartwarming holiday film that centers on the importance of family and the true spirit of the season. It’s genuinely funny and full of charm, making it a fun, if somewhat predictable, watch. Plus, Paul Krumholtz’s portrayal of Bernard the Head Elf is simply fantastic!

1) The Family Man

Released in 2000, The Family Man is similar in spirit to It’s a Wonderful Life. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Jack Campbell, a successful but lonely Wall Street executive. He’s given an opportunity, thanks to a chance encounter with Cash (Don Cheadle), to see what his life would be like if he’d prioritized relationships over his career.

As a big movie fan, I was really pleased to see this one do so well. And honestly, it’s one of Nicolas Cage’s best performances that doesn’t get nearly enough credit! It’s not a super complicated film – the themes are pretty classic for a holiday movie – but what I loved was how real it felt. It is a Christmas movie, absolutely, but it’s also just a genuinely good film, even if you took the holidays out of the equation.
