The new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has had a very successful opening weekend in theaters around the world, but it didn’t quite earn as much as the previous Avatar film. While it broke some records and brought in a lot of money, it opened with slightly lower numbers than 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water.
Avatar: Fire & Ash earns almost $350 million at global box office opening
Avatar: Fire & Ash opened to $88 million in domestic theaters, a bit lower than expected and a significant decrease from the $134 million debut of the previous film, The Way of Water. Worldwide, it earned an impressive $257 million internationally, bringing its total opening weekend to $345 million – one of the year’s biggest so far (according to Box Office Mojo). However, it didn’t quite reach the $435 million global opening of the second movie.
The success of Avatar: Fire and Ash is complicated – it’s setting records, but isn’t doing as well as the previous Avatar movie right away. However, past Avatar films haven’t relied on huge opening weekends. The original Avatar started with $77 million domestically, then went on to play in theaters for seven weeks and earn nearly $2.92 billion worldwide. The Way of Water followed the same trend, staying at number one for seven weeks and ultimately grossing $2.3 billion globally.
The history of this series influences how people view the latest installment, Fire and Ash. Although the initial opening wasn’t as strong as previous films, the franchise consistently performs well, particularly during the busy Christmas season. A large portion of the opening weekend revenue – 66% – came from premium formats like IMAX and 3D. Importantly, the film attracted a younger audience, with 38% of viewers being 25 or younger, indicating the series continues to appeal to new fans.
Similar to the previous Avatar movies, Avatar 3 was very expensive to make, costing around $350 million—and that doesn’t even include marketing costs. While it doesn’t need to earn $2 billion to be profitable, it’s still predicted to be a huge success worldwide. However, its long runtime—3 hours and 17 minutes—will likely limit how many times it can be shown each day (according to Variety).
