James Cameron, a highly successful science fiction director and frequent Oscar winner, has been openly discussing his latest film, Avatar: Fire & Ash. This new installment arrives quickly after Avatar: The Way of Water – only three years, compared to the thirteen-year wait for the previous sequel. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film is performing well financially, earning $345 million worldwide in its opening weekend and receiving an ‘A’ grade from audiences according to CinemaScore.
The third Avatar movie is predicted to perform well at the box office and also be a strong contender for awards, particularly in technical categories like visual effects and sound design. Both Avatar and The Way of Water received Best Picture nominations – nine and four respectively – and each won awards for their technical achievements. This pattern of technical success without major overall wins isn’t unique to Avatar; Dune and director Denis Villeneuve have experienced something similar. James Cameron, whose Titanic famously won 11 Oscars, discussed this trend with Variety.
I don’t really focus on the Academy Awards. I don’t deliberately think about them, and I certainly don’t make movies trying to win their approval. Historically, they haven’t often recognized films like Avatar or other science fiction movies. It seems like sci-fi rarely gets the recognition it deserves.
Denis Villeneuve created the stunning Dune films, and it seems like they succeeded despite not receiving recognition from the Director’s Guild. I’d rather focus on making movies that audiences enjoy, instead of chasing awards. That’s just my opinion!
Dune 3 Is The Last Chance For The Oscars To Put This Right (& What About Cameron’s Own Chances?)

James Cameron is spot-on about Denis Villeneuve and science fiction films in general. The Academy Awards often overlook genre films and franchises, but Villeneuve truly deserved recognition. His work on the Dune films, particularly Part Two, was exceptional. It’s not only one of the best sci-fi movies of the 21st century, but also created one of the most immersive and visually stunning cinematic worlds we’ve seen, comparable to Avatar and The Lord of the Rings. Cameron himself received a Best Director nomination for Avatar, and Villeneuve should have been nominated for one of the Dune films – he was previously nominated for Arrival, however.
Denis Villeneuve won’t be continuing with the Dune series after the third film, meaning that movie represents his last opportunity to win an Oscar for his work on the franchise. Will the Academy recognize him? There’s a past example with The Lord of the Rings, which didn’t receive much Oscar attention until Return of the King swept the awards, winning 11, including Best Director for Peter Jackson. However, The Lord of the Rings was a bigger phenomenon than Dune, and the story for the third Dune film – based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah – is significantly more complex and unusual.
The 2027 Oscars are already looking competitive, with several big names planning potential contenders. Alejandro González Iñárritu is working on Digger with Tom Cruise, Christopher Nolan has The Odyssey in development, Steven Spielberg is making a new sci-fi film called Disclosure Day, and Martin McDonagh is planning Wild Horse Nine. While Dune 3 might not achieve the same level of success as The Return of the King, Denis Villeneuve is likely to finally receive a Best Director nomination for it.
While Avatar: Fire & Ash will probably receive nominations in technical categories at the Oscars, it doesn’t seem likely to be nominated for Best Picture – a first for the Avatar series. Critics haven’t been overwhelmingly positive, and with the series already receiving two nominations, it faces a tough challenge. The same applies to director James Cameron, though he doesn’t seem concerned. Ultimately, Oscar nominations don’t always reflect a film’s quality, and box office success may be more important for both Fire & Ash and the upcoming Dune 3, at least for their directors.
Avatar: Fire & Ash is now in theaters. Dune: Part Three releases on December 18th, 2026.
