Sigourney Weaver recently discussed the long-awaited sequel to the 1999 film Galaxy Quest. While the sci-fi comedy was a hit and hinted at a possible continuation, efforts to create Galaxy Quest 2 never came to fruition. There was even talk of a television series at one point, but there haven’t been any updates on that idea.
Sigourney Weaver, the Academy Award nominee, recently spoke with Vanity Fair about the characters she’s played throughout her impressive career. Though she’s famous for her role as Ripley in the Alien movies, Weaver highlighted Gwen DeMarco from Galaxy Quest as one of her most beloved characters.
The actor explained, “I really hoped to play Gwen because I felt a stronger connection to that character than to Ripley.” She fondly remembered working with talented casts, including Tony Shaloub and Alan Rickman, calling them “an amazing group.” She then shared some thoughts about a sequel that, sadly, was never made.
My co-writer, Bob Gordon, actually wrote another script, but he refused to give it to DreamWorks, believing they hadn’t fully understood the potential of our original film. We always intended to make a sequel, but after Alan passed away, we lost the motivation to continue. It was a real honor to create this film as a tribute to actors.
Weaver also talked about the possibility of a director’s cut of Galaxy Quest. Apparently, this version would have a different feel, largely due to a less restrained performance from Alan Rickman. Weaver explained that DreamWorks removed some of Rickman’s more nuanced scenes at the last minute to make the film more appealing to children, positioning it as competition for Stuart Little. He wonders why those scenes haven’t been included in a re-release. Maybe fans should keep hoping for this potentially improved version – after all, as the film famously says, “Never give up, never surrender!”
‘Galaxy Quest’ Is One of Weaver’s Favorite Roles
Sigourney Weaver is best known for her role as Ellen Ripley. For decades, she brought to life the brave crew member of the Nostromo who fearlessly battled the terrifying xenomorph. Her performance is so legendary in the science fiction world that it’s difficult to picture an Alien movie without her as the strong, central hero.

The actor is also known for iconic roles like Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters, Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist, and Janey Carver in The Ice Storm. However, Gwen DeMarco remains a particularly special role, one she still cherishes for the goals she had and the connection she felt with the character.
I was drawn to the role of a young, aspiring actress navigating the world of fame. She desperately wants to be taken seriously, but people tend to underestimate her because of her looks – she’s beautiful, blonde, and has a noticeable figure, and even someone like the commander doesn’t see beyond that. I really connected with Gwen and Tawny, the character I play, and felt a strong sense of empathy and camaraderie with her.
