It’s widely speculated that the upcoming remake of Halo: Combat Evolved will exclude the game’s popular multiplayer feature. Known for its expansive single-player campaign, Halo is one of Xbox’s most significant video game franchises, and a key aspect of its popularity lies in its comprehensive value proposition. The series is renowned for its immersive single-player storyline, swift multiplayer action, and virtually endless content thanks to custom game and Forge features, as well as co-op content like the campaign and modes such as Firefight. While Halo has introduced some of these elements over time, its foundation lies in a captivating single-player campaign that could be enjoyed with a friend and a groundbreaking PvP multiplayer mode.
In the past few releases, it’s been challenging for the series to incorporate all the game modes from the start on launch day. For instance, Halo 5 debuted without Forge (which was later added), while Halo Infinite lacked a co-op campaign and Forge mode for nearly a year. This has left many longtime players disappointed, as they are accustomed to receiving all content at once, now finding themselves waiting for these modes over the span of several months. As a result, some players feel the games seem unfinished and quickly lose interest, with some not even coming back when these modes become available again. Unfortunately, more troubling news has surfaced about the Halo franchise, leaving fans disheartened.
Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Won’t Feature Multiplayer, Says Rumor
There’s been a lot of chatter and hints suggesting that we might see a remake of the original “Halo: Combat Evolved” next year, to mark its 25th anniversary. This game was one of the launch titles for the original Xbox back in 2001. It appears that Halo Studios could be remaking this classic as a trial run for their transition to Unreal Engine 5. However, recent whispers suggest that this potential remake won’t include a multiplayer mode. As per reliable source Rebs Gaming, a well-known YouTube channel about Halo, they haven’t heard any information about multiplayer plans for the game, which is rumored to be released in 2026.
2023 marked the start of development for this remake, primarily focusing on recreating the campaign from Halo: Combat Evolved. Whether the game’s cooperative play will remain intact isn’t certain, but it seems unlikely that it would be omitted. Given the significance of co-op in Halo, its absence would be surprising. It may be that the multiplayer aspect is being worked on separately. Interestingly, the Xbox 360 version of Halo: Combat Evolved utilized the engine from Halo: Reach for its multiplayer, a choice that sparked some debate at the time. It’s possible that they will redesign the multiplayer as part of another multiplayer project in development. Rebs Gaming has hinted at a new multiplayer Halo project underway, which could potentially be the next installment in the series. At this point, it appears to be a standalone product, but its exact nature remains unclear.
Moreover, the source suggested that a remake of the popular game Halo could possibly appear on PlayStation consoles next year. Given that Xbox is transferring series like Gears of War, Forza, and others to the PS5, this speculation isn’t too far-fetched. However, it’s uncertain whether more Halo titles will be available for the PS5 prior to that time. The anticipation builds as a new Halo installment is expected to be unveiled by year-end; however, its identity still remains a mystery.
