How to Train Your Dragon Just Beat Two Fan-Favorite Marvel Movies

This weekend, “How to Train Your Dragon” reached a significant achievement at the domestic box office, surpassing $234 million. This places it above several well-known films like “Doctor Strange” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, popular Marvel movies. However, it falls behind some other blockbusters too. Nevertheless, as per The Numbers, it ranks 169th among the highest-grossing domestic box office films ever released. Interestingly, despite being a live-action remake of the 2010 animated original with many identical scenes, it’s still playing in cinemas across the U.S., so its position may continue to change.

On June 13th, How to Train Your Dragon hit theaters, and it’s been quite successful, even against tough competition. The film has received generally favorable reviews and was particularly well-received by families, especially when their children were out of school for summer break. In many instances, its familiarity was seen as a strength, as fans appreciated comparing it to the original.

A brief glance at The Numbers’ ranking reveals that some of your preferred films are positioned both above and below How to Train Your Dragon. Some titles on this list may surprise you; for instance, it grossed more than not only the Marvel movies mentioned previously but also X-Men: The Last Stand, Logan, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. On the DC side, it outperformed Justice League, while among family films, it even surpassed earnings of Brave, WALL-E, and Big Hero 6.

It’s somewhat unexpected that the films just mentioned haven’t managed to surpass “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in terms of ranking. For instance, “How to Train Your Dragon” fell short of it. Interestingly, there are several movies that have maintained their positions on this list for decades now – “Ghostbusters”, “Twister”, “Men in Black”, and the 1989 version of “Batman” are included here as well.

Indeed, even without ratings, the movie “How to Train Your Dragon” had already achieved success in the hearts of fans and the studio. The film has already been given the go-ahead for a sequel, which will be another adaptation of the second animated movie. Additionally, it boasts an impressive 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where it was lauded as a fitting summer blockbuster.

In numerous U.S. cinemas, “How to Train Your Dragon” continues its run. As of now, there’s no information about when it will be available for streaming, but the original animated version can be streamed immediately on HBO Max. The sequel is being developed and is currently slated for release in June 2027.
