Owners of the Nintendo Switch 2 express disappointment over certain fundamental features that seem absent compared to those found on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Despite Nintendo’s reputation for trailblazing in the gaming industry with unique innovations such as motion controls, hybrid consoles, and more, their approach has occasionally been met with criticism for being outdated. The Nintendo Switch, for instance, lacked native voice chat capabilities, which were only accessible through a smartphone app. Additionally, there are no achievement systems on Nintendo’s hardware. These omissions suggest that Nintendo may be lagging behind in terms of contemporary gaming standards.
As a gamer myself, I’ve got to say that while the Nintendo Switch 2 is undeniably sleeker and more refined compared to its predecessor, it hasn’t exactly blown us away with innovation. Don’t get me wrong, the original Switch was already a fantastic console, but it had its quirks, which this new model seems to have addressed beautifully.
From a hardware standpoint, it feels more robust and premium. The software inside is smoother too, offering small yet significant improvements over the first one. However, some gamers are disheartened that the Switch 2 doesn’t seem to be catching up with features that its competitors have been offering for quite some time now.
As an enthusiastic admirer of gaming platforms, I share the sentiments of Reddit user comfybonfire who finds it inconvenient that Nintendo Switch 2’s eShop doesn’t offer a “Cart” feature like its competitors, Xbox Series X and PS5. This Cart feature allows players to gather multiple games in a digital cart before checking out all at once, making bulk purchases during sales a breeze. Unfortunately, the same convenience isn’t available on Nintendo, where we have to purchase each game individually, which can be quite frustrating given the eShop’s less-than-ideal user experience.
The Reddit user expressed their puzzlement by saying, “I honestly can’t fathom a rationale behind Nintendo omitting a ‘Cart’ function for the Switch 2 eShop. They’ve incorporated the option to sort your wishlist based on games on sale (which is great), but users still need to buy each game individually. It’s perplexing, given that there was a ‘Add to Cart’ feature available on the PS3’s digital store. One would think Nintendo could have implemented this for the Switch 1 or at least the Switch 2. At this juncture, it seems intentional not to include a Cart function; I simply can’t conceive of a reason why.”
It’s not entirely unexpected for Nintendo to be late to the game, given their history. The anticipated Switch 2 significantly improved the eShop experience by making it quicker and smoother, leading some to speculate that perhaps the decision to exclude a cartridge slot was motivated by performance concerns related to the original Switch. Others propose that this move could be an attempt to discourage second thoughts among users, as with a cart, there’s time to contemplate purchases and notice the total cost accumulating. Without a physical cart, impulse buys might become more common.
It seems that other Reddit users concurred with the post. Some mentioned that the faster speeds on the Switch 2 eShop have increased their desire to purchase additional games, yet this convenience comes with a slight caveat. Perhaps Nintendo will implement this feature in the future, though I doubt it’s high on their list of priorities at the moment.
