Out of the blue, the animated musical series “KPop Demon Hunters” emerged as a Netflix sensation. With its vibrant visuals, pulsating action sequences, and catchy K-pop tunes, it seamlessly blends the current K-pop craze with the ever-growing fanbase of animation enthusiasts seeking fresh content on the platform. The captivating trio of protagonists – Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) who form the KPop girl group “HUNTR/X” – have sparked demand for additional tales set in this universe.
Sony Pictures Animation’s Netflix release, “KPop Demon Hunters,” stormed to the top of the US Top 10 Movies on Netflix, while its soundtrack soared to the first and second spots on Billboard’s Top 100, a remarkable achievement not even real-life KPop groups have managed. After repeatedly watching it, fans are clamoring for a sequel and answers to some unresolved questions. Let’s explore some of these questions and how a sequel to “KPop Demon Hunters” might address them. Be warned: spoilers for “KPop Demon Hunters” may follow.
1) How Powerful Was Rumi’s Father?
In an unexpected turn of events, it’s revealed that the frontwoman of HUNTR/X, known as Rumi, has a part-demon heritage. Her mother was both a member of a girl group and a demon hunter who tragically passed away when Rumi was still young. Growing up with little knowledge about her family beyond her mother’s demise and her father’s background, Rumi has spent her entire life concealing her demonic traits, fearful that others might reject her if they were exposed.
After years of deceit, the guilt eventually silences her voice. As her feelings turn more turbulent, she acquires the power to create tremors and fissures in the Harmoon defense shield, allowing evil spirits access. She’s the sole character who can unsettle the structure of Harmoon, hinting at the immense might her demon father could have possessed. Now that she has embraced herself, she might embark on a quest to uncover the truth about her parents and the affection they might have shared. A love between humans and demons that Rumi recognizes as feasible.
2) Are the Demons Forced to Serve Gwi-Ma?
In my cinematic exploration, as I delve deeper into the life of Jinu, the enigmatic lead singer of the Saja Boys, I uncover a heartrending tale. It seems that the cunning Gwi-Ma deceived Jinu four centuries ago, luring him to become a demon. Back then, Jinu and his family were plagued by poverty, and Jinu’s exceptional singing talent was wasted on the streets as he struggled to support them. His despair and embarrassment made him an easy mark for Gwi-Ma’s deceitful words. At first, things appeared promising for Jinu, but before long, Gwi-Ma’s influence consumed him, taking over his body with intricate designs and ensnaring his soul in a life of servitude. This revelation challenges everything I’ve been taught about demons, leaving me questioning if they are all inherently evil or merely victims of Gwi-Ma’s insatiable greed. In the sequel, I envision myself embarking on a perilous journey to the demon realm, seeking answers about Gwi-Ma’s powers and potentially finding a means to liberate those demons who yearn for freedom from under Gwi-Ma’s tyranny.
3) Where Did the Bracelet Rumi Gave Jinu Go?
Fans particularly appreciated the dynamic between Rumi and Jinu in KPop Demon Hunters. A pivotal point was when Jinu discovered that Rumi was part demon, leading him to invite her out. As they spent time together, learning more about one another, a highlight occurred during one of their dates when Rumi received a bracelet and chose to gift it to Jinu. This bracelet remained with Jinu until he ultimately betrayed Rumi, preparing for the final stage of Gwi-Ma’s plan.
At the end of the film, Jinu’s precious bracelet is seen in the mouth of his lovable, dim-witted demon tiger messenger, right before the final scene. As this tiger carries letters and other items, it’s possible that Jinu entrusted it to keep the bracelet safe, as it appeared to be his most cherished possession. Intriguingly, the tiger is perched atop a billboard promoting the new HUNTR/X album “Comeback,” leading some fans to wonder if this could hint at a sequel. We’re left guessing whether the tiger returned the bracelet to Rumi, or if it’s holding onto it in anticipation of Jinu’s return.
4) Is Jinu Still Alive?
In a moving and timeless tale that captivated viewers, duo Rumi and Jinu, often referred to as Rujinu by their fans, embarked on a journey from adversaries to lovers. Initially, Rumi concealed her demonic nature, but found solace in the acceptance offered by Jinu. On the other hand, Jinu had long been tormented by the condemning whispers instilled by Gwi-Ma, yet in Rumi’s presence, he was free from those haunting voices. Tragically, the most poignant moment of the movie unfolds as Jinu selflessly gives up his life to protect Rumi.
In the midst of Gwi-Ma’s overpowering abilities, Jinu protects her by taking the brunt of the blast and expresses his gratitude for restoring his spirit, which he then passes on to her. This poignant yet beautiful scene unfolds as she encloses his soul within hers, resulting in a more potent soul weapon that slices through Gwi-Ma, lessening his strength significantly. Although this act ultimately leads to Jinu’s demise, fans speculate that there might be a method to retrieve his spirit from the weapon and reincarnate it into a physical form again. Fans have reminisced about their past walks together, and with unpublished designs from the original story depicting Rumi and Jinu on a romantic date at an aquarium sharing a kiss, fans now eagerly await for Jinu’s return to make this dream a reality.
